[ज] कथं विराटनगरे मम पूर्वपितामहाः अज्ञातवासम उषिता दुर्यॊधन भयार्दिताः ॥ ४-१-१ ॥
'Janamejaya said, "How did my great-grandfathers, tormented by fear of Duryodhana, manage to remain undiscovered while living in disguise in the city of Virata?"' ॥ 4-1-1 ॥
english translation
तथा तु स वराँल लब्ध्वा धर्माधर्मभृतां वरः गत्वाश्रमं बराह्मणेभ्य आचख्यौ सर्वम एव तत ॥ ४-१-२ ॥
'O lord of men, listen to how your great-grandfathers spent their year in concealment in the city of Virata. Having received boons from the god of Justice, Yudhishthira—the foremost among the virtuous—returned to the hermitage and narrated everything that had transpired to the Brahmanas.' ॥ 4-1-2 ॥
english translation
कथयित्वा तु तत सर्वं बराह्मणेभ्यॊ युधिष्ठिरः अरणी सहितं तस्मै बराह्मणाय नयवेदयत ॥ ४-१-३ ॥
'And having narrated everything to them, Yudhishthira returned to that noble Brahmana—who had followed him—the churning staff and fire-sticks he had lost.' ॥ 4-1-3 ॥

ततॊ युधिष्ठिरॊ राजा धर्मपुत्रॊ महामनाः संनिवर्त्यानुजान सर्वान इति हॊवाच भारत ॥ ४-१-४ ॥
'And then, O Bharata, Yudhishthira, the high-souled son of the god of Justice, called together all his younger brothers and addressed them, saying—' ॥ 4-1-4 ॥

दवादशेमानि वर्षाणि राष्ट्राद विप्रॊषिता वयम तरयॊदशॊ ऽयं संप्राप्तः कृच्छ्रः परमदुर्वसः ॥ ४-१-५ ॥
'Exiled from our kingdom, we have spent twelve long years. Now the thirteenth—fraught with hardship—has come upon us.' ॥ 4-1-5 ॥
