[दरुपद] एवम एतन महाबाहॊ भविष्यति न संशयः न हि दुर्यॊधनॊ राज्यं मधुरेण परदास्यति ॥ ५-४-१ ॥
‘Drupada said: "O mighty-armed one, it shall indeed be even as you have said—of this there can be no doubt! Never will Duryodhana yield the kingdom by peaceful means."’ ॥ 5-4-1 ॥

[darupada] evama etana mahAbAhò bhaviSyati na saMzayaH na hi duryòdhanò rAjyaM madhureNa paradAsyati ॥ 5-4-1 ॥

‘Dhritarashtra, blinded by his love for his son, will follow his will. Bhishma and Drona too, out of misguided weakness, will side with him, while Karna and Shakuni, driven by their own folly, will stand steadfast by his side.’ ॥ 5-4-2 ॥

anuvartsyati taM cApi dhRtarASTraH sutapriyaH bhISmadròNau ca kArpaNyAna maurkhyAda rAdheya saubalau ॥ 5-4-2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptबलदेवस्य वाक्यं तु मम जञाने न युज्यते एतद धि पुरुषेणाग्रे कार्यं सुनयम इच्छता ॥ ५-४-३ ॥
‘The words of Baladeva are, indeed, worthy of regard; the course he has advised is proper for one who seeks a peaceful settlement.’ ॥ 5-4-3 ॥

baladevasya vAkyaM tu mama jaJAne na yujyate etada dhi puruSeNAgre kAryaM sunayama icchatA ॥ 5-4-3 ॥

‘Yet, in my judgment, Duryodhana should never be addressed in gentle tones. Vicious by nature, that wicked man cannot, I believe, be brought to reason through mildness.’ ॥ 5-4-4 ॥

na tu vAcyò mRdu vacò dhArtarASTraH kathaM cana na hi mArdavasAdhyò 'sau pApabuddhira matò mama ॥ 5-4-4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptगर्दभे मार्दवं कुर्याद गॊषु तीक्ष्णं समाचरेत मृदु दुर्यॊधने वाक्यं यॊ बरूयात पापचेतसि ॥ ५-४-५ ॥
‘Mildness suits the treatment of a meek ass, but when it comes to untamed bulls, sternness alone must be applied. If anyone were to speak softly to Duryodhana, vicious as he is, that wretch would only deem the speaker a weak and foolish simpleton.’ ॥ 5-4-5 ॥
