[दरुपद] एवम एतन महाबाहॊ भविष्यति न संशयः न हि दुर्यॊधनॊ राज्यं मधुरेण परदास्यति ।। ५-४-१ ।।
‘Drupada said: "O mighty-armed one, it shall indeed be even as you have said—of this there can be no doubt! Never will Duryodhana yield the kingdom by peaceful means."’ ।। 5-4-1 ।।
‘Dhritarashtra, blinded by his love for his son, will follow his will. Bhishma and Drona too, out of misguided weakness, will side with him, while Karna and Shakuni, driven by their own folly, will stand steadfast by his side.’ ।। 5-4-2 ।।
न तु वाच्यॊ मृदु वचॊ धार्तराष्ट्रः कथं चन न हि मार्दवसाध्यॊ ऽसौ पापबुद्धिर मतॊ मम ।। ५-४-४ ।।
‘Yet, in my judgment, Duryodhana should never be addressed in gentle tones. Vicious by nature, that wicked man cannot, I believe, be brought to reason through mildness.’ ।। 5-4-4 ।।
‘Mildness suits the treatment of a meek ass, but when it comes to untamed bulls, sternness alone must be applied. If anyone were to speak softly to Duryodhana, vicious as he is, that wretch would only deem the speaker a weak and foolish simpleton.’ ।। 5-4-5 ।।
