नारुं तुदः सयान न नृशंसवादी; न हीनतः परम अभ्याददीत ययास्य वाचा पर उद्विजेत; न तां वदेद रुशतीं पापलॊक्याम ।। २-५९-६ ।।

sanskrit

'One should not utter harsh words that pierce others' hearts. Nor should one use dice and other foul means to subjugate enemies. Such words, disapproved by the Vedas and leading to hell, should not be spoken, as they only serve to annoy others.' ।। 2-59-6 ।।

english translation

nAruM tudaH sayAna na nRzaMsavAdI; na hInataH parama abhyAdadIta yayAsya vAcA para udvijeta; na tAM vadeda ruzatIM pApalòkyAma || 2-59-6 ||

hk transliteration

समुच्चरन्त्य अतिवादा हि वक्त्राद; यैर आहतः शॊचति रात्र्यहानि परस्य नामर्मसु ते पतन्ति; तान पण्डितॊ नावसृजेत परेषाम ।। २-५९-७ ।।

sanskrit

'Excessive and harsh words that cause deep hurt should not be uttered from one's mouth. Such words, which wound others and bring sorrow during the night, should be avoided by the wise, as they harm others profoundly.' ।। 2-59-7 ।।

english translation

samuccarantya ativAdA hi vaktrAda; yaira AhataH zòcati rAtryahAni parasya nAmarmasu te patanti; tAna paNDitò nAvasRjeta pareSAma || 2-59-7 ||

अजॊ हि शस्त्रम अखनत किलैकः; शस्त्रे विपन्ने पद्भिर अपास्य भूमिम निकृन्तनं सवस्य कण्ठस्य घॊरं; तद्वद वैरं मा खनीः पाण्डुपुत्रैः ।। २-५९-८ ।।

sanskrit

'The learned should never utter harsh words aimed at others. Just as a goat that had swallowed a hook suffered greatly when the hunter, placing its head on the ground, tore its throat painfully while extracting the hook, so too, harsh words can cause great harm.' ।। 2-59-8 ।।

english translation

ajò hi zastrama akhanata kilaikaH; zastre vipanne padbhira apAsya bhUmima nikRntanaM savasya kaNThasya ghòraM; tadvada vairaM mA khanIH pANDuputraiH || 2-59-8 ||

hk transliteration

न किं चिद ईड्यं परवदन्ति पापं; वनेचरं वा गृहमेधिनं वा तपस्विनं संपरिपूर्ण विद्यं; भषन्ति हैवं शवनराः सदैव ।। २-५९-९ ।।

sanskrit

'Therefore, O Duryodhana, do not seize the wealth of the Pandavas and do not make them your enemies. The sons of Pritha never use such harsh words. It is only base individuals, like dogs, who hurl insults at all types of people—whether they are forest dwellers, householders, ascetics, or learned scholars.' ।। 2-59-9 ।।

english translation

na kiM cida IDyaM paravadanti pApaM; vanecaraM vA gRhamedhinaM vA tapasvinaM saMparipUrNa vidyaM; bhaSanti haivaM zavanarAH sadaiva || 2-59-9 ||

hk transliteration

दवारं सुघॊरं नरकस्य जिह्मं; न बुध्यसे धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्र तवाम अन्वेतारॊ बहवः कुरूणां; दयूतॊदये सह दुःशासनेन ।। २-५९-१० ।।

sanskrit

'Alas! The son of Dhritarashtra does not realize that dishonesty is one of the terrifying gateways to hell. Many of the Kurus, including Dushasana, have followed him down this path of deceit in the game of dice.' ।। 2-59-10 ।।

english translation

davAraM sughòraM narakasya jihmaM; na budhyase dhRtarASTrasya putra tavAma anvetArò bahavaH kurUNAM; dayUtòdaye saha duHzAsanena || 2-59-10 ||
