न चाकामः शकुनिना देविताहं; न चेन मां धृष्णुर आह्वयिता सभायाम आहूतॊ ऽहं न निवर्ते कदा चित; तद आहितं शाश्वतं वै वरतं मे ।। २-५२-१६ ।।

sanskrit

'Though I am unwilling to gamble, I will not participate unless the wicked Shakuni summons me in the assembly. If he challenges me, however, I will not refuse, for it is my steadfast and eternal vow.' ।। 2-52-16 ।।

english translation

na cAkAmaH zakuninA devitAhaM; na cena mAM dhRSNura AhvayitA sabhAyAma AhUtò 'haM na nivarte kadA cita; tada AhitaM zAzvataM vai varataM me || 2-52-16 ||

hk transliteration

[व] एवम उक्त्वा विदुरं धर्मराजः; परायात्रिकं सर्वम आज्ञाप्य तूर्णम परायाच छवॊ भूते सगणः सानुयात्रः; सह सत्रीभिर दरौपदीम आदि कृत्वा ।। २-५२-१७ ।।

sanskrit

'Vaisampayana continued, "King Yudhishthira, having spoken thus to Vidura, ordered that preparations for the journey be made immediately. The next day, the king, accompanied by his relatives, attendants, and the women of his household, with Draupadi among them, set out for the capital of the Kurus."' ।। 2-52-17 ।।

english translation

[va] evama uktvA viduraM dharmarAjaH; parAyAtrikaM sarvama AjJApya tUrNama parAyAca chavò bhUte sagaNaH sAnuyAtraH; saha satrIbhira daraupadIma Adi kRtvA || 2-52-17 ||

hk transliteration

दैवं परज्ञां तु मुष्णाति तेजश चक्षुर इवापतत धातुश च वशम अन्वेति पाशैर इव नरः सितः ।। २-५२-१८ ।।

sanskrit

'Just as a brilliant object can dazzle and blind one’s vision, Fate deprives us of reason, and man, bound as if by a cord, submits to the will of Providence.' ।। 2-52-18 ।।

english translation

daivaM parajJAM tu muSNAti tejaza cakSura ivApatata dhAtuza ca vazama anveti pAzaira iva naraH sitaH || 2-52-18 ||

hk transliteration

इत्य उक्त्वा परययौ राजा सह कषत्त्रा युधिष्ठिरः अमृष्यमाणस तत पार्थः समाह्वानम अरिंदमः ।। २-५२-१९ ।।

sanskrit

'Thus speaking, King Yudhishthira departed with Vidura. The relentless Arjuna, not disturbed by the summons, remained steadfast.' ।। 2-52-19 ।।

english translation

itya uktvA parayayau rAjA saha kaSattrA yudhiSThiraH amRSyamANasa tata pArthaH samAhvAnama ariMdamaH || 2-52-19 ||

hk transliteration

बाह्लिकेन रथं दत्तम आस्थाय परवीरहा परिच्छन्नॊ ययौ पार्थॊ भरातृभिः सह पाण्डवः ।। २-५२-२० ।।

sanskrit

'Arjuna, the slayer of enemies, mounted the chariot gifted by the king of Valhika and, dressed in royal attire, set out with his brothers.' ।। 2-52-20 ।।

bAhlikena rathaM dattama AsthAya paravIrahA paricchannò yayau pArthò bharAtRbhiH saha pANDavaH || 2-52-20 ||
