[वि] जानाम्य अहं दयूतम अनर्थमूलं; कृतश च यत्नॊ ऽसय मया निवारणे राजा तु मां पराहिनॊत तवत्सकाशं; शरुत्वा विद्वञ शरेय इहाचरस्व ।। २-५२-११ ।।

sanskrit

'Vidura said, "I understand that gambling is the source of great misery, and I made every effort to dissuade the king from it. However, the king has sent me to you. Knowing all this, O learned one, please advise on what would be best."' ।। 2-52-11 ।।

english translation

[vi] jAnAmya ahaM dayUtama anarthamUlaM; kRtaza ca yatnò 'saya mayA nivAraNe rAjA tu mAM parAhinòta tavatsakAzaM; zarutvA vidvaJa zareya ihAcarasva || 2-52-11 ||

[य] के तत्रान्ये कितवा दीव्यमाना; विना राज्ञॊ धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रैः पृच्छामि तवां विदुर बरूहि नस तान; यैर दीव्यामः शतशः संनिपत्य ।। २-५२-१२ ।।

sanskrit

'Yudhishthira said, "Apart from the sons of Dhritarashtra, who are the other unscrupulous gamblers ready to play? Tell us, O Vidura, who they are, so we know with whom we will be gambling, risking hundreds of our possessions."' ।। 2-52-12 ।।

english translation

[ya] ke tatrAnye kitavA dIvyamAnA; vinA rAjJò dhRtarASTrasya putraiH pRcchAmi tavAM vidura barUhi nasa tAna; yaira dIvyAmaH zatazaH saMnipatya || 2-52-12 ||

[वि] गान्धारराजः शकुनिर विशां पते; राजातिदेवी कृतहस्तॊ मताक्षः विविंशतिश चित्रसेनश च राजा; सत्यव्रतः पुरुमित्रॊ जयश च ।। २-५२-१३ ।।

sanskrit

'Vidura said, "O monarch, the king of Gandhara, Shakuni, known for his exceptional skill in dice and his reckless betting, is present. Also, there are King Vivingati, King Chitrasena, Satyavrata, Purumitra, and Jaya. These are the individuals who have gathered."' ।। 2-52-13 ।।

[vi] gAndhArarAjaH zakunira vizAM pate; rAjAtidevI kRtahastò matAkSaH viviMzatiza citrasenaza ca rAjA; satyavrataH purumitrò jayaza ca || 2-52-13 ||

[य] महाभयाः कितवाः संनिविष्टा; मायॊपधा देवितारॊ ऽतर सन्ति धात्रा तु दिष्टस्य वशे किलेदं; नादेवनं कितवैर अद्य तैर मे ।। २-५२-१४ ।।

sanskrit

'Yudhishthira said, "It appears that some of the most cunning and dangerous gamblers, relying heavily on deceit, are present. However, the entire universe is under the control of fate and the will of its Creator; nothing is beyond its influence."' ।। 2-52-14 ।।

english translation

[ya] mahAbhayAH kitavAH saMniviSTA; mAyòpadhA devitArò 'tara santi dhAtrA tu diSTasya vaze kiledaM; nAdevanaM kitavaira adya taira me || 2-52-14 ||

नाहं राज्ञॊ धृतराष्ट्रस्य शासनान; न गन्तुम इच्छामि कवे दुरॊदरम इष्टॊ हि पुत्रस्य पिता सदैव; तद अस्मि कर्ता विदुरात्थ मां यथा ।। २-५२-१५ ।।

sanskrit

'O learned one, I do not wish to engage in gambling at the command of King Dhritarashtra. A father always seeks to benefit his son. You are our guide, O Vidura. Please advise us on what is proper.' ।। 2-52-15 ।।

english translation

nAhaM rAjJò dhRtarASTrasya zAsanAna; na gantuma icchAmi kave duròdarama iSTò hi putrasya pitA sadaiva; tada asmi kartA vidurAttha mAM yathA || 2-52-15 ||
