असौ मतिमतां शरेष्ठॊ य एष जगतः परभुः संभावयति यद्य एवं तवद्वाक्याच च जनार्दनः एवम एतत सर्वम इति सर्वं तद वितथं धरुवम ।। २-३८-१६ ।।

sanskrit

'If this Janardana (Krishna), the master of the world and the best among the wise, is to be praised according to your words, then everything you say is meaningless and false.' ।। 2-38-16 ।।

english translation

asau matimatAM zareSThò ya eSa jagataH parabhuH saMbhAvayati yadya evaM tavadvAkyAca ca janArdanaH evama etata sarvama iti sarvaM tada vitathaM dharuvama || 2-38-16 ||

hk transliteration

न गाथा गाथिनं शास्ति बहु चेद अपि गायति परकृतिं यान्ति भूतानि भूलिङ्गशकुनिर यथा ।। २-३८-१७ ।।

sanskrit

'Just as verses sung frequently by a chanter do not affect the chanter himself, so too do all creatures act according to their inherent nature. This is akin to the bird Bhulinga, which, despite preaching against recklessness, picks the particles of flesh from between a lion's teeth.' ।। 2-38-17 ।।

english translation

na gAthA gAthinaM zAsti bahu ceda api gAyati parakRtiM yAnti bhUtAni bhUliGgazakunira yathA || 2-38-17 ||

hk transliteration

नूनं परकृतिर एषा ते जघन्या नात्र संशयः अतः पापीयसी चैषां पाण्डवानाम अपीष्यते ।। २-३८-१८ ।।

sanskrit

'Assuredly, your disposition is very base, and there is no doubt about it. Similarly, it appears that the sons of Pandu, who revere Krishna and follow you as their guide, are also tainted by a sinful nature.' ।। 2-38-18 ।।

english translation

nUnaM parakRtira eSA te jaghanyA nAtra saMzayaH ataH pApIyasI caiSAM pANDavAnAma apISyate || 2-38-18 ||

Though you claim to possess knowledge of virtue, you have deviated from the path of the wise, and thus you are sinful.

'O Bhishma, who, knowing himself to be virtuous and knowledgeable, would act as you have, under the guise of virtue? If you truly understand the ways of morality and if your mind is guided by wisdom, then you are indeed blessed.' ।। 2-38-20 ।।

kò hi dharmiNama AtmAnaM jAnaJa jaJAnavatAM varaH kuryAda yathA tavayA bhISma kRtaM dharmama avekSatA || 2-38-20 ||
