अविभवस्तु शरीरमात्र मल्लिकाफेनककषायमात्रपरिच्छदः पूज्याद्देशादागतः कलासु विचक्षणस्तदुपदेशेन गोठयां देशोधिते च वृत्ते साधयेदात्मानमिति पीठमर्दः ॥ ३१ ॥
When a cultivated gentleman lacks money and all he has left is a wooden bed, some soap, and oil for his body, he should go to the gatherings and festivals of prosperous people and assure his livelihood by giving lessons to prostitutes. By thus becoming their teacher, he acquires the position of pithamarda [steward and dancing master].

उपनागरकवृत्त-पूज्य (सांस्कृतिक वैभव-सम्पन्न) देश से आगत एवं कलाओं में निपुण नागरक, जो धनविहीन हो और जिसके पास मल्लिका (बैठने में सहारा देने वाली लकड़ी), फेनक (साबुन), कषाय (सुगन्धित द्रव्य) मात्र शेष रह गये हों तथा जो नागरकगोष्ठियों में कलाओं के उपदेश से और वेश्याओं को उनके लिए हितकर परामर्श से जीविका चलाये, उसे पीठमर्द कहते हैं॥ ३१ ॥

भुक्तविभवस्तु गुणवान् सकलत्रो वेशे गोष्ठयां च बहुमतस्तदुपजीवी च विटः ॥ ३२ ॥
An intelligent and well-born man, expert in the arts, who has dissipated his wealth and broken off with his family, but is esteemed in the houses of the courtesans and in fashionable circles and lives at their expense is known as a gigolo [vita].

जो नागरकवृत्त भोग कर कारणवश वैभवहीन हो गया हो, नागरक गुणों से सम्पन्न एवं स्त्रीयुक्त हो, वेश्याओं एवं नागरकगोष्ठियों में जिसका बहुमान हो और उन्हीं से जीविका चलाता हो, वह विट कहलाता है ॥ ३२ ॥

एकदेशविद्यस्तु क्रीडनको विश्वास्यश्च विदूषकः । वैहासिको वा ॥ ३३ ॥
If he does not know the tricks, he is a plaything, an object of amusement, but if he inspires confidence, he becomes a companion and amusing confidant [vidushaka], while continuing sometimes to play the clown [vaihasika].

जो व्यक्ति सभी विद्याओं या कलाओं का अङ्गमात्र जानता हो, लोगों के मनोविनोद का साधन हो, तथा नायक का विश्वासपात्र हो, उसे विदूषक कहते हैं। हँसाते रहने के कारण वह वैहासिक भी कहा जाता है ॥ ३३ ॥

एते वेश्यानां नागरकाणां च मन्त्रिणः सन्धिविग्रहनियुक्ताः ॥ ३४ ॥
Employed as a secretary [mantri], he busies himself with the appointments and breaches, between courtesans and citizens.

ऐसे व्यक्ति (पीठमर्द, विट और विदूषक) वेश्याओं और नागरकों के मन्त्री होते हैं तथा सन्धि और विग्रह में नियुक्त रहते हैं ॥ ३४ ॥

He utilizes beggar-women, shaven-headed nuns expert in the arts, women of irregular life, or old whores, to arrange appointments.

इन उपनागरिकों (पीठमर्द, विट एवं विदूषक) के समान कलानिपुण भिक्षुणी, कुलटा और वृद्ध वेश्याएँ भी कह दी गयी हैं॥ ३५ ॥
