हुंहुंगुग्लुगिति प्रियां अभिलषन्क्रोशत्युलूको मुदा पूर्णः स्याद्गुरुलु प्रदीप्तं अपि च ज्ञेयं सदा किस्किसि । विज्ञेयः कलहो यदा बलबलं तस्य असकृद्वाशितं दोषायएव टटट्टटैति न शुभाः शेषास्तु दीप्त स्वराः ॥ ८८-३६ ॥
The owl is often seen flying after its mate setting up the joyous cry of huṃhuṃ or gugluk. The sound is benefic. If the sound be gurulu or kiskisi, it is always malefic. If the owl be seen to sound frequently as balabala. there will be quarrel; but if the sound be ṭaṭaṭṭaṭa, there will be misery. All other sounds are malefic and do not indicate good luck.

huMhuMguglugiti priyAM abhilaSankrozatyulUko mudA pUrNaH syAdgurulu pradIptaM api ca jJeyaM sadA kiskisi । vijJeyaH kalaho yadA balabalaM tasya asakRdvAzitaM doSAyaeva TaTaTTaTaiti na zubhAH zeSAstu dIpta svarAH ॥ 88-36 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptसारसकूजितं इष्टफलं तद्यद्युगपद्विरुतं मिथुनस्य । एकरुतं न शुभं यदि वा स्यादेकरुते प्रविरौति चिरेण ॥ ८८-३७ ॥
If the crane with its mate be heard to sound together, it indicates good luck. But if one of them he heard to sound alone or if they be heard to sound one after the other, such sound is not auspicious.
english translation
sArasakUjitaM iSTaphalaM tadyadyugapadvirutaM mithunasya । ekarutaM na zubhaM yadi vA syAdekarute pravirauti cireNa ॥ 88-37 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptचिरिल्विरिल्विति स्वरैः शुभं करोति पिङ्गलाः । अतो अपरे तु ये स्वराः प्रदीप्तसंज्ञितास्तु ते ॥ ८८-३८ ॥
If the Piṅgala be heard to sound as cirilvirilvi, good luck is indicated. Any other sound is inauspicious.
english translation
cirilvirilviti svaraiH zubhaM karoti piGgalAH । ato apare tu ye svarAH pradIptasaMjJitAstu te ॥ 88-38 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptइशिविरुतं गमनप्रतिषेधि कुशुकुशु चेत्कलहं प्रकरोति । अभिमतकार्यगतिं च यथा सा कथयति तं च विधिं कथयामि ॥ ८८-३९ ॥
If the Piṅgala he heard to sound as iśi, it stops the journey. If it be heard to sound as kuśukuśu, there will be quarrel. I shall now state what has to be done to make this bird foretell future events.
english translation
izivirutaM gamanapratiSedhi kuzukuzu cetkalahaM prakaroti । abhimatakAryagatiM ca yathA sA kathayati taM ca vidhiM kathayAmi ॥ 88-39 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptदिनान्तसन्ध्यासमये निवासम् आगम्य तस्याः प्रयतश्च वृक्षम् । देवान्समभ्यर्च्य पितामहऽदीन् नवाम्बरस्तं च तरुं सुगन्धैः ॥ ८८-४० ॥
The tree in which the bird Piṅgala may happen to dwell shall be visited by a person who has bathed either in the evening or in the twilight hours; the person shall first worship Brahmā and the other Devas. He shall then adorn the tree with a fine new cloth and with sandal-paste.
english translation
dinAntasandhyAsamaye nivAsam Agamya tasyAH prayatazca vRkSam । devAnsamabhyarcya pitAmaha'dIn navAmbarastaM ca taruM sugandhaiH ॥ 88-40 ॥
