वल्लीलतागुल्मतरुप्रभेदैः स्युर्दन्तकाष्ठानि सहस्रशो यैः । फलानि वाच्यान्यथ तत्प्रसङ्गो मा भूदतो वच्म्यथ कामिकानि ॥ ८५-०१ ॥
Tooth-brush (dantakāṣṭha) may be made of the twigs of spreading creepers, creepers, shrubs and trees. A description of all their effects will be long and elaborate. We shall therefore confine ourself to twigs which are to be chewed to secure certain special ends.

vallIlatAgulmataruprabhedaiH syurdantakASThAni sahasrazo yaiH । phalAni vAcyAnyatha tatprasaGgo mA bhUdato vacmyatha kAmikAni ॥ 85-01 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअज्ञातपूर्वाणि न दन्तकाष्ठान्य् अद्यान्न पत्रैश्च समन्वितानि । न युग्मपर्वाणि न पाटितानि न चऊर्ध्वशुष्काणि विना त्वचा च ॥ ८५-०२ ॥
Twigs of unknown trees shall be rejected, and twigs with leaves, those of an even number of joints, those which are split or dry at the ends and those with no bark ought not to be chewed.
english translation
ajJAtapUrvANi na dantakASThAny adyAnna patraizca samanvitAni । na yugmaparvANi na pATitAni na caUrdhvazuSkANi vinA tvacA ca ॥ 85-02 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptवैकङ्कतश्रीफलकाश्मरीषु ब्राह्मी द्युतिः क्षेमतरौ सुदाराः । वृद्धिर्वटे अर्के प्रचुरं च तेजः पुत्रा मधूके सगुणाः प्रियत्वम् ॥ ८५-०३ ॥
The twigs of Vikaṅkata, Śrīphala and Kāśmarī, if chewed, will give a person Brāhminical splendour. The twigs of Kṣema will secure to a person a good wife. The twigs of the Banyan will increase a person’s wealth and stock of grain. The Arka twig will increase the splendour of his appearance. The Madhūka twig will give him a son.

vaikaGkatazrIphalakAzmarISu brAhmI dyutiH kSematarau sudArAH । vRddhirvaTe arke pracuraM ca tejaH putrA madhUke saguNAH priyatvam ॥ 85-03 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptलक्ष्मीः शिरीषे च तथा करञ्जे प्लक्षे अर्थसिद्धिः समभीप्सिता स्यात् । मान्यत्वं आयाति जनस्य जात्यां प्राधान्यं अश्वत्थतरौ वदन्ति ॥ ८५-०४ ॥
The twigs of Śirīṣa and Karañja if used as tooth-brush will make a person wealthy and prosperous. Those of Plakṣa will bring him money. Those of Aśvattha will make him respected by the people and renowned among his own caste-men.
english translation
lakSmIH zirISe ca tathA karaJje plakSe arthasiddhiH samabhIpsitA syAt । mAnyatvaM AyAti janasya jAtyAM prAdhAnyaM azvatthatarau vadanti ॥ 85-04 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptआरोग्यं आयुर्बदरीबृहत्योर् ऐश्वर्यवृद्धिः खदिरे सबिल्वे । द्रव्याणि चैष्टान्यतिमुक्तके स्युः प्राप्नोति तान्येव पुनः कदम्बे ॥ ८५-०५ ॥
The twig of the Badarī if chewed as a tooth-brush (dantakāṣṭha) will make a person healthy; that of the Bṛhati will give him a long life; that of the Khadira and Bilva will increase his wealth; that of the Atimukta and Kadamba will bring him the object of his desire.

ArogyaM AyurbadarIbRhatyor aizvaryavRddhiH khadire sabilve । dravyANi caiSTAnyatimuktake syuH prApnoti tAnyeva punaH kadambe ॥ 85-05 ॥
