वामावर्तो मलिनकिरणः सस्फुलिङ्गो अल्पमूर्तिः क्षिप्रं नाशं व्रजति विमलस्नेहवर्त्यन्वितो अपि । दीपः पापं कथयति फलं शब्दवान्वेपनश्च व्याकीर्णार्चिर्विशलभमरुद्यश्च नाशं प्रयाति ॥ ८४-०१ ॥

sanskrit

A lamp (dīpa) whose flame turns from right to left, whose light is dim and small, and emits sparks and which dies out even when the oil and the wick are pure, indicates evil. A lamp (dīpa) whose flame is quivering, spreading and attended with noise and which dies out in the absence of the fly or the wind also indicates evil.

english translation

vAmAvarto malinakiraNaH sasphuliGgo alpamUrtiH kSipraM nAzaM vrajati vimalasnehavartyanvito api । dIpaH pApaM kathayati phalaM zabdavAnvepanazca vyAkIrNArcirvizalabhamarudyazca nAzaM prayAti ॥ 84-01 ॥

दीपः संहतमूर्तिरायततनुर्निर्वेपनो दीप्तिमान् निःशब्दो रुचिरः प्रदक्षिणगतिर्वैदूर्य हेमद्युतिः । लक्ष्मीं क्षिप्रं अभिव्यनक्ति सुचिरं यश्चौद्यतं दीप्यते शेषं लक्षणं अग्निलक्षणसमं योज्यं यथायुक्तितः ॥ ८४-०२ ॥

sanskrit

If the flame be close and united, long, still, bright, without noise, beautiful, turning from left to right and of the colour of vaidūrya or gold, it indicates approaching prosperity. In other respects all that has been said in the case of fīre applies here also.

english translation

dIpaH saMhatamUrtirAyatatanurnirvepano dIptimAn niHzabdo ruciraH pradakSiNagatirvaidUrya hemadyutiH । lakSmIM kSipraM abhivyanakti suciraM yazcaudyataM dIpyate zeSaM lakSaNaM agnilakSaNasamaM yojyaM yathAyuktitaH ॥ 84-02 ॥
