प्रथमे पुरुषे भुजगः सितासितो हस्तमात्रमूर्तिश्च । दक्षिणतो वहति शिरा सक्षारं भूरि पानीयम् ॥ ५४-६६ ॥

In digging, at the depth of a man, there will be a snake spotted black and white and of the length of a cubit; to the south of it there will be a large current of salt water.

english translation

prathame puruSe bhujagaH sitAsito hastamAtramUrtizca । dakSiNato vahati zirA sakSAraM bhUri pAnIyam ॥ 54-66 ॥

उत्तरतश्च करीरस्याहिगृहं दक्षिणे जलं स्वादु । दशभिः पुरुषैर्ज्ञेयं पुर्षे पीतो अत्र मण्डूकः ॥ ५४-६७ ॥

If a snake hole be seen to the north of the Karīra, then to the south of it there will be a current of sweet water at a depth of ten men; in digging there will be seen a yellow frog at the depth of a man.

uttaratazca karIrasyAhigRhaM dakSiNe jalaM svAdu । dazabhiH puruSairjJeyaM purSe pIto atra maNDUkaH ॥ 54-67 ॥

रोहीतकस्य पश्चादहिवासश्चेत्त्रिभिः करैर्याम्ये । द्वादश पुरुषान्खात्वा सक्षारा पश्चिमेन शिरा ॥ ५४-६८ ॥

If a snake hole be seen to the west of the Rohītaka, there will be a current at a distance of three cubits to the south of the hole and at a depth of twelve men running westwards.

english translation

rohItakasya pazcAdahivAsazcettribhiH karairyAmye । dvAdaza puruSAnkhAtvA sakSArA pazcimena zirA ॥ 54-68 ॥

इन्द्रतरोर्वल्मीकः प्राग्दृश्यः पश्चिमे शिरा हस्ते । खात्वा चतुर्दश नरान्कपिला गोधा नरे प्रथमे ॥ ५४-६९ ॥

If an ant-hill be seen to the east of the Indrataru, there will be a current at the distance of a cubit to the west of the hill and at a depth of fourteen men; in digging there will be seen an alligator of brown colour at the depth of a man.

यदि वा सुवर्णनाम्नस्तरोर्भवेद्वामतो भुजङ्गगृहम् । हस्तद्वये तु याम्ये पञ्चदशनरावसाने +अम्बु ॥ ५४-७० ॥

If a snake hole be seen to the north of the Suvarṇa tree, there will be a current at the distance of two cubits to the south of the hole and at a depth of fifteen men.
