पूर्वोत्तरदिग्मूर्धा पुरुषो अयं अवाङ्मुखो अस्य शिरसि शिखी । आपो मुखे स्तने अस्यार्यमा ह्युरस्यापवत्सश्च ॥ ५३-५१ ॥

The Vāstupuruṣa (house-demon) lies with his face turned towards the ground and head in the north-east. Agni holds his head, Āpa his face, Aryaman his right nipple and Āpavatsa his breast.

english translation

pUrvottaradigmUrdhA puruSo ayaM avAGmukho asya zirasi zikhI । Apo mukhe stane asyAryamA hyurasyApavatsazca ॥ 53-51 ॥

पर्जन्याद्या बाह्या दृक्श्रवणौरःस्थलांसगा देवाः । सत्याद्याः पञ्च भुजे हस्ते सविता च सावित्रः ॥ ५३-५२ ॥

The Devas from Parjanya to Sūrya occupying the outer squares hold respectively the right eye, ear, breast and shoulder; the five Devas from Satyā hold the right arm; Savitā and Sāvitra hold the right hand; Vitatha and Bṛhatkṣata hold the right side.

parjanyAdyA bAhyA dRkzravaNauraHsthalAMsagA devAH । satyAdyAH paJca bhuje haste savitA ca sAvitraH ॥ 53-52 ॥

वितथो बृहत्क्षतयुतः पार्श्वे जठरे स्थितो विवस्वांश्च । ऊरू जानु च जङ्घे स्फिगिति यमाद्यैः परिगृहीताः ॥ ५३-५३ ॥

Vivasvān holds the belly; the four Devas from Yama hold the right thigh, knee, shank and buttock.

vitatho bRhatkSatayutaH pArzve jaThare sthito vivasvAMzca । UrU jAnu ca jaGghe sphigiti yamAdyaiH parigRhItAH ॥ 53-53 ॥

एते दक्षिणपार्श्वे स्थानेष्वेवं च वामपार्श्वस्थाः । मेढ्रे शक्रजयन्तौ हृदये ब्रह्मा पिता अङ्घ्रिगतः ॥ ५३-५४ ॥

These Devas hold the right limbs of the Vāstupuruṣa. Similarly, the other Devas hold the left limbs. Indra and Jaya hold his penis; Brahmā his heart and the Pitṛ Devas his feet.

ete dakSiNapArzve sthAneSvevaM ca vAmapArzvasthAH । meDhre zakrajayantau hRdaye brahmA pitA aGghrigataH ॥ 53-54 ॥

अष्टाष्टकपदं अथ वा कृत्वा रेखाश्च कोणगास्तिर्यक् । ब्रह्मा चतुष्पदो अस्मिन्नर्धपदा ब्रह्मकोणस्थाः ॥ ५३-५५ ॥

Alternatively, one may construct a grid of sixty-four squares, drawing lines diagonally and across. In this arrangement, Brahmā occupies the four central squares, while the corner squares of the central region are allotted half-shares.

aSTASTakapadaM atha vA kRtvA rekhAzca koNagAstiryak । brahmA catuSpado asminnardhapadA brahmakoNasthAH ॥ 53-55 ॥
