अङ्गुलशतार्धं उत्तम ऊनः स्यात् पञ्चविंशतिः खड्गः । अङ्गुलमानाज्ज्ञेयो व्रणो अशुभो विषमपर्वस्थः ॥ ५०-०१ ॥

A sword 50 digits long is a good one and one 25 digits long is a bad one: the measurement is to he made by means of the inch scale. Marks at the odd digits would produce evil.

aGgulazatArdhaM uttama UnaH syAt paJcaviMzatiH khaDgaH । aGgulamAnAjjJeyo vraNo azubho viSamaparvasthaH ॥ 50-01 ॥

श्रीवृक्षवर्धमानऽतपत्रशिवलिङ्गकुण्डलाब्जानाम् । सदृशा व्रणाः प्रशस्ता ध्वजऽयुधस्वस्तिकानां च ॥ ५०-०२ ॥

Marks along the back of the sword (khaḍga) of the shape of the Bilva tree, a platter, an umbrella, a Śivaliṅga, pendants, a lotus, a banner and a weapon of war. are indicative of prosperity.

zrIvRkSavardhamAna'tapatrazivaliGgakuNDalAbjAnAm । sadRzA vraNAH prazastA dhvaja'yudhasvastikAnAM ca ॥ 50-02 ॥

कृकलासकाककङ्कक्रव्यादकबन्धवृश्चिकऽकृतयः । खड्गे व्रणा न शुभदा वंशानुगताः प्रभूताश्च ॥ ५०-०३ ॥

Marks of the shape of a lizard, a crow, a heron, a hawk, a headless trunk and a scorpion are indicative of evil.

स्फुटितो ह्रस्वः कुण्ठो वंशच्छिन्नो न दृग्मनो अनुगतः । अस्वन इति चानिष्टः प्रोक्तविपर्यस्त इष्टफलः ॥ ५०-०४ ॥

A sword that is broken, or short, or blunt, or split at the back, or ill-formed or without sound, is indicative of evil; if otherwise it indicates good luck.

sphuTito hrasvaH kuNTho vaMzacchinno na dRgmano anugataH । asvana iti cAniSTaH proktaviparyasta iSTaphalaH ॥ 50-04 ॥

क्वणितं मरणायौक्तं पराजयाय प्रवर्तनं कोशात् । स्वयं उद्गीर्णे युद्धं ज्वलिते विजयो भवति खड्गे ॥ ५०-०५ ॥

If the sword should sound like lyre, the king would die; if it should come out of the sheath of itself, the king would be defeated in battle: if it should move forward of itself, there would be wars in the land; and if it should appear to shine brilliantly, there would be success in battle.

kvaNitaM maraNAyauktaM parAjayAya pravartanaM kozAt । svayaM udgIrNe yuddhaM jvalite vijayo bhavati khaDge ॥ 50-05 ॥
