नाकारणं विवृणुयान्न विघट्टयेच्च पश्येन्न तत्र वदनं न वदेच्च मूल्यम् । देशं न चास्य कथयेत्प्रतिमानयेन्न नैव स्पृशेन्नृपतिरप्रयतो असियष्टिम् ॥ ५०-०६ ॥

The sword (khaḍga) shall not be taken out for no purpose; nor shall it be rubbed against a substance, nor shall its edge be looked at, nor its price stated, nor the place of its manufacture mentioned, nor shall it be compared to anything, nor shall it be touched by a person who is impure.

english translation

nAkAraNaM vivRNuyAnna vighaTTayecca pazyenna tatra vadanaM na vadecca mUlyam । dezaM na cAsya kathayetpratimAnayenna naiva spRzennRpatiraprayato asiyaSTim ॥ 50-06 ॥

गोजिह्वासंस्थानो नीलोत्पलवंशपत्रसदृशश्च । करवीरपत्रशूलाग्रमण्डलाग्राः प्रशस्ताः स्युः ॥ ५०-०७ ॥

That is a good sword which resembles the tongue of the cow, or the petal of the blue lotus or the leaf of the bamboo or asafoetida, or one whose end is pointed like the end of a spear or round.

gojihvAsaMsthAno nIlotpalavaMzapatrasadRzazca । karavIrapatrazUlAgramaNDalAgrAH prazastAH syuH ॥ 50-07 ॥

निष्पन्नो न छेद्यो निकषैः कार्यः प्रमाणयुक्तः सः । मूले म्रियते स्वामी जननी तस्याग्रतश्छिन्ने ॥ ५०-०८ ॥

After making a sword of the prescribed dimensions, it shall be rubbed against a whetstone that it may not be broken. If it should break about the hilt, the master would die, and if about the end, his mother would die.

english translation

niSpanno na chedyo nikaSaiH kAryaH pramANayuktaH saH । mUle mriyate svAmI jananI tasyAgratazchinne ॥ 50-08 ॥

यस्मिन्त्सरुप्रदेशे व्रणो भवेत्तद्वदेव खड्गस्य । वनितानां इव तिलको गुह्ये वाच्यो मुखे दृष्ट्वा ॥ ५०-०९ ॥

If there be a mark in the handle of the sword, there will also be a mark in the sword itself just as a spot on the face of a woman indicates the presence of a spot on her private part.

english translation

yasmintsarupradeze vraNo bhavettadvadeva khaDgasya । vanitAnAM iva tilako guhye vAcyo mukhe dRSTvA ॥ 50-09 ॥

अथ वा स्पृशति यदङ्गं प्रष्टा निस्त्रिंशभृत्तदवधार्य । कोशस्थस्यऽदेश्यो व्रणो अस्ति शास्त्रं विदित्वेदम् ॥ ५०-१० ॥

If a swordsman appear before an astrologer, the latter shall determine the marks of the sword from the particular parts of his body which the swordsman may happen to touch.

atha vA spRzati yadaGgaM praSTA nistriMzabhRttadavadhArya । kozasthasya'dezyo vraNo asti zAstraM viditvedam ॥ 50-10 ॥
