उन्मादाः षट् पृथग्दोषनिचयाधिविषोद्भवाः । उन्मादो नाम मनसो दोषैरुन्मार्गगैर्मदः ॥ १ ॥

unmAdAH SaT pRthagdoSanicayAdhiviSodbhavAH । unmAdo nAma manaso doSairunmArgagairmadaH ॥ 1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptशारीरमानसैर्दुष्टैरहितादन्नपानतः । विकृतासात्म्यसमलाद्विषमादुपयोगतः ॥ २ ॥
The bodily and mental doshas being contaminated by indulgence in unsuitable (unhealthy) foods and drinks, and by foods which are spoiled, unaccustomed, containing dirt (contaminated), or consumed in an improper manner;

zArIramAnasairduSTairahitAdannapAnataH । vikRtAsAtmyasamalAdviSamAdupayogataH ॥ 2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptविषण्णस्याल्पसत्त्वस्य व्याधिवेगसमुद्गमात् । क्षीणस्य चेष्टावैषम्यात्पूज्यपूजाव्यतिक्रमात् ॥ ३ ॥
in those who are dejected, who are of weak mind, by the sudden increase in the intensity of diseases, in emaciated persons indulging in improper activities, and by committing mistakes in the procedure of worship of those who are worshipful;

viSaNNasyAlpasattvasya vyAdhivegasamudgamAt । kSINasya ceSTAvaiSamyAtpUjyapUjAvyatikramAt ॥ 3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptआधिभिर्चित्तविभ्रंशाद्विषेणोपविषेण च । एभिर्हि हीनसत्त्वस्य हृदि दोषाः प्रदूषिताः ॥ ४ ॥
due to mental distress leading to loss of balance of mind, and by the effect of strong poisons or semi-poisons (upavisha)—by these causes, the doshas get highly vitiated in the heart of a person of feeble mind;

AdhibhircittavibhraMzAdviSeNopaviSeNa ca । ebhirhi hInasattvasya hRdi doSAH pradUSitAH ॥ 4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptधियो विधाय कालुष्यं हृत्वा मार्गान् मनोवहान् । उन्मादं कुर्वते तेन धीविज्ञानस्मृतिभ्रमात् ॥ ५ ॥
