अहीन कालं राज अर्थं स्व अर्थं प्रिय हितैः सह । पर अर्थं देश काले च ब्रूयाद् धर्म अर्थ संहितम् ॥
Without losing the opportune moments, he should speak of the king's interest; of his own interest when in company with persons friendly to him; and of others interests in a suitable time and place, and in conformity to the principles of righteousness and economy.
english translation
ahIna kAlaM rAja arthaM sva arthaM priya hitaiH saha । para arthaM deza kAle ca brUyAd dharma artha saMhitam ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptपृष्टः प्रिय हितं ब्रूयान् न ब्रूयाद् अहितं प्रियम् । अप्रियं वा हितं ब्रूयात् शृण्वतो अनुमतो मिथः ॥
When asked, he should tell the king what is both good and pleasing, but not what is bad, though pleasing; if the king is pleased to listen, he may secretly tell what, though unpleasant, is good.
english translation
pRSTaH priya hitaM brUyAn na brUyAd ahitaM priyam । apriyaM vA hitaM brUyAt zRNvato anumato mithaH ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतूष्णीं वा प्रतिवाक्ये स्याद् वेष्य आदींश् च न वर्णयेत् । अप्रिया अपि दक्षाः स्युस् तद् भावाद् ये बहिष् कृताः ॥
He may even keep silence, but. should never describe what is hateful; by abstaining from talking of what the king hates, even undesirable persons have become powerful when, seeing that the king likes only pleasant things without caring for their evil consequences, they have followed his will.
english translation
tUSNIM vA prativAkye syAd veSya AdIMz ca na varNayet । apriyA api dakSAH syus tad bhAvAd ye bahiS kRtAH ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअनर्थ्याश् च प्रिया दृष्टाश् चित्त ज्ञान अनुवर्तिनः । अभिहास्येष्व् अभिहसेद् घोर हासांश् च वर्जयेत् ॥
While laughing in jest, he should avoid loud laughter; he shall avoid evil aspersions against others, nor ascribe evil to others;
english translation
anarthyAz ca priyA dRSTAz citta jJAna anuvartinaH । abhihAsyeSv abhihased ghora hAsAMz ca varjayet ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptपरात् संक्रामयेद् घोरं न च घोरं परे वदेत् । तितिक्षेत आत्मनश् चैव क्षमावान् पृथिवी समः ॥
he shall forgive evil done to himself and have as much forbearance as the earth.
english translation
parAt saMkrAmayed ghoraM na ca ghoraM pare vadet । titikSeta Atmanaz caiva kSamAvAn pRthivI samaH ॥
