स्त्रियं दासीम् अधिमेहयतां पूर्वः साहस दण्डः, अदासीं मध्यमः, कृत अवरोधाम् उत्तमः, कुल स्त्रियं वधः ॥
When a watchman has carnal connection with a slave woman, he shall be punished with the first amercement; with a free woman middlemost amercement; with a woman arrested for untimely movement, the highest amercement; and a woman of high birth (kulastrí), he shall be put to death.
english translation
striyaM dAsIm adhimehayatAM pUrvaH sAhasa daNDaH, adAsIM madhyamaH, kRta avarodhAm uttamaH, kula striyaM vadhaH ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptचेतन अचेतनिकं रात्रि दोषम् अशंसतो नागरिकस्य दोष अनुरूपो दण्डः, प्रमाद स्थाने च ॥
When the officer in charge of the city (nágaraka) does not make a report (to the king) of whatever nocturnal nuisance of animate or inanimate nature (chetanâchetana) has occurred, or when he shows carelessness (in the discharge of his duty), he shall be punished in proportion to the gravity of his crime.
english translation
cetana acetanikaM rAtri doSam azaMsato nAgarikasya doSa anurUpo daNDaH, pramAda sthAne ca ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptनित्यम् उदक स्थान मार्ग भ्रमच् छन्न पथ वप्र प्राकार रक्षा अवेक्षणं नष्ट प्रस्मृत अपसृतानां च रक्षणम् ॥
He shall make a daily inspection of reservoirs of water, of roads, of the hidden passage for going out of the city, of forts, fortwalls, and other defensive works. He shall also keep in his safe custody of whatever things he comes across as lost, forgotten or left behind by others.
english translation
nityam udaka sthAna mArga bhramac channa patha vapra prAkAra rakSA avekSaNaM naSTa prasmRta apasRtAnAM ca rakSaNam ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptबन्धन अगारे च बाल वृद्ध व्याधित अनाथानां जात नक्षत्र पौर्णमासीषु विसर्गः ॥
On the days to which the birth star of the king is assigned, as well as on full moon days, such prisoners as are young, old, diseased, or helpless (anátha) shall be let out from the jail (bandhanâgâra).
english translation
bandhana agAre ca bAla vRddha vyAdhita anAthAnAM jAta nakSatra paurNamAsISu visargaH ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptपण्य शीलाः समय अनुबद्धा वा दोष निष्क्रयं दद्युः ॥
or those who are of charitable disposition or who have made any agreement with the prisoners may liberate them by paying an adequate ransom.
english translation
paNya zIlAH samaya anubaddhA vA doSa niSkrayaM dadyuH ॥
