ऊषसूतं वालुकैलं शैलमूलाकरोद्भवम् । लवणं कटुकं छेदि विहितं कटु चोच्यते ॥३२१॥
Salt that is produced from the heat of the sun, derived from sand, and from mountain roots, is cutting (sharp in action), and is said to be pungent.

The alkalis such as those derived from barley, the excrement of animals, and other alkalis (including those prepared from ash, etc.), are all digestive, alleviating conditions like abdominal tumors, hemorrhoids, and dysentery. They are beneficial for digestion and pacify blood-pitta and doshas.

यवक्षार, पशु के मल से प्राप्त क्षार, और अन्य क्षार (जिनमें राख से बने हुए क्षार भी शामिल हैं) सभी पाचनकारी होते हैं, और गुल्म, बवासीर, और ग्रहणी के दोषों को दूर करते हैं। ये पाचन में सहायक होते हैं और रक्तपित्त तथा दोषों को शांत करते हैं।

The two types of alkalis that should be known are those derived from ash and those derived from the excrement of animals. They are effective in alleviating conditions such as disorders of reproductive fluids, phlegm, constipation, hemorrhoids, tumors, and spleen disorders.

The alkali derived from the excrement of animals is hot, alleviates wind, is astringent, and helps in reducing strength and fat. It is also beneficial in purifying the bladder.

The alkali which is drying, alleviates wind, reduces mucus, and corrects pitta disorders, and is a sharp, fire-igniting substance is called alkali.
