Among these, the qualities classified as potency (Vīrya) are as follows: Hot and oily are pungent qualities, Cold and slimy are endowed with water qualities, Earthy qualities are associated with heaviness, Lightness is associated with space and air qualities, Roughness is associated with air qualities, Smoothness is associated with space qualities. Of these: Hot and oily substances pacify vāta, Cold, smooth, and slimy substances pacify pitta, Pungent, rough, and clear substances pacify kapha, Heavy digestion pacifies vāta and pitta, Light digestion pacifies kapha. Qualities like softness, coldness, and smoothness are perceptible by touch, Sliminess and clarity are perceptible by vision and touch, Oiness and roughness are perceptible by vision, Pungency causes discomfort in the mouth. Heavy digestion is associated with excessive mucus and urinary issues, Light digestion is associated with vāta disturbances and urinary issues. Among substances with similar qualities, the taste variations should be noted. For example, a sweet and heavy substance is predominantly earthy, and a sweet and oily substance also falls into the same category.
