As said by Lord Dhanvantari.

‘शल’ ‘श्वल’ आशुगमने धातूः; तयोराद्यस्य शल्यमिति रूपम् ||३||
The term 'Shal' is derived from the root 'Shval,' which means 'to quickly enter.' Hence, the first form of this root is called 'Shalya.'
‘शल’ शब्द ‘श्वल’ धातु से लिया गया है, जिसका अर्थ है ‘जल्दी प्रवेश करना।’ इसलिए, इस धातु का पहला रूप ‘शल्यम्’ कहा जाता है।
‘zala’ ‘zvala’ Azugamane dhAtUH; tayorAdyasya zalyamiti rUpam ||3||

It (the splinter) is of two types: one that is inherent in the body and one that is external.
यह (शल) दो प्रकार का होता है: एक शरीर में स्वाभाविक रूप से उपस्थित और दूसरा बाहरी।

सर्वशरीराबाधकरं शल्यं, तदिहोपदिश्यत इत्यतः [३] शल्यशास्त्रम् ||५||
A splinter that causes disturbance to the entire body is what is referred to here. Thus, this is the science of splinters.
वह शल जो शरीर को पूरी तरह से प्रभावित करता है, वही यहाँ पर वर्णित है। अतः यही शल्यशास्त्र है।
