For the purpose of protection and adornment, the ears of a child are pierced. This should be done in the sixth or seventh month during the auspicious days of the waxing moon, on favorable tithis, and during good muhuratas and nakshatras. The procedure involves performing a ritual of auspicious chanting at the sacred place, either in the presence of the child's mother or while seated on a cushion. The physician, using his right hand, gently pierces the ear with a sharp, clean needle, ensuring that the child is comforted and distracted with toys. The left ear should be pierced first, followed by the right.

The pain caused by the piercing, due to the presence of blood, should be understood as being significant if the piercing is done in a different region from the usual, but if done in the usual area, it is considered to be without any trouble.

In cases where the piercing is done inadvertently or through chance, various complications may arise depending on the specific location pierced: Kalika (vein) piercings may lead to fever, burning sensation, chills, and pain. Marmarika (nervous points) piercings can cause pain, fever, and formation of lumps or nodules. Lohitika (arterial) piercings may result in inflammation, stiffness, sudden fall, headaches, and ear pain. For each of these issues, appropriate remedies should be applied as per the specific condition.
