श्रीशुक उवाच अंशुमांश्च तपस्तेपे गङ्गानयनकाम्यया । कालं महान्तं नाशक्नोत्ततः कालेन संस्थितः ।। ९-९-१ ।।

sanskrit

Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued: King Aṁśumān, like his grandfather, performed austerities for a very long time. Nonetheless, he could not bring the Ganges to this material world, and thereafter, in due course of time, he died. ।। 9-9-1 ।।

english translation

शुकदेव गोस्वामी ने आगे कहा : राजा अंशुमान ने अपने पितामह की तरह दीर्घकाल तक तपस्या की तो भी वह गंगा नदी को इस भौतिक जगत में न ला सका और उसके बाद कालक्रम में उसका देहान्त हो गया। ।। ९-९-१ ।।

दिलीपस्तत्सुतस्तद्वदशक्तः कालमेयिवान् । भगीरथस्तस्य पुत्रस्तेपे स सुमहत्तपः ।। ९-९-२ ।।

sanskrit

Like Aṁśumān himself, Dilīpa, his son, was unable to bring the Ganges to this material world, and he also became a victim of death in due course of time. Then Dilīpa’s son, Bhagīratha, performed very severe austerities to bring the Ganges to this material world. ।। 9-9-2 ।।

english translation

अंशुमान की भाँति उसका पुत्र दिलीप भी गंगा को इस भौतिक जगत में ला पाने में असमर्थ रहा और कालक्रम में उसकी भी मृत्यु हो गई। तत्पश्चात् दिलीप के पुत्र भगीरथ ने गंगा को इस भौतिक जगत में लाने के लिए अत्यन्त कठिन तपस्या की। ।। ९-९-२ ।।

दर्शयामास तं देवी प्रसन्ना वरदास्मि ते । इत्युक्तः स्वमभिप्रायं शशंसावनतो नृपः ।। ९-९-३ ।।

sanskrit

Thereafter, mother Ganges appeared before King Bhagīratha and said, “I am very much satisfied with your austerities and am now prepared to give you benedictions as you desire.” Being thus addressed by Gaṅgādevī, mother Ganges, the King bowed his head before her and explained his desire. ।। 9-9-3 ।।

english translation

तत्पश्चात् माता गंगा राजा भगीरथ के समक्ष प्रकट होकर बोलीं, “मैं तुम्हारी तपस्या से अत्यधिक प्रसन्न हूँ और तुम्हें मुँहमाँगा वर देने को तैयार हूँ।” गंगादेवी द्वारा इस प्रकार सम्बोधित हुए राजा ने उनके समक्ष अपना सिर झुकाया और अपना मन्तव्य बतलाया। ।। ९-९-३ ।।

कोऽपि धारयिता वेगं पतन्त्या मे महीतले । अन्यथा भूतलं भित्त्वा नृप यास्ये रसातलम् ।। ९-९-४ ।।

sanskrit

Mother Ganges replied: When I fall from the sky to the surface of the planet earth, the water will certainly be very forceful. Who will sustain that force? If I am not sustained, I shall pierce the surface of the earth and go down to Rasātala, the Pātāla area of the universe. ।। 9-9-4 ।।

english translation

माता गंगा ने उत्तर दिया: जब मैं आकाश से पृथ्वीलोक के धरातल पर गिरूँगी तो मेरा जल अत्यन्त वेगवान होगा। इस वेग को कौन धारण कर सकेगा? यदि कोई मुझे धारण नहीं कर सकेगा तो मैं पृथ्वी की सतह को भेदकर रसातल में अर्थात् ब्रह्माण्ड के पाताल क्षेत्र में चली जाऊँगी। ।। ९-९-४ ।।

ko'pi dhArayitA vegaM patantyA me mahItale | anyathA bhUtalaM bhittvA nRpa yAsye rasAtalam || 9-9-4 ||

किं चाहं न भुवं यास्ये नरा मय्यामृजन्त्यघम् । मृजामि तदघं कुत्र राजंस्तत्र विचिन्त्यताम् ।। ९-९-५ ।।

sanskrit

O King, I do not wish to go down to the planet earth, for there the people in general will bathe in my water to cleanse themselves of the reactions of their sinful deeds. When all these sinful reactions accumulate in me, how shall I become free from them? You must consider this very carefully. ।। 9-9-5 ।।

english translation

हे राजा, मैं पृथ्वीलोक पर नहीं उतरना चाहती क्योंकि सभी लोग अपने पापकर्मों के फलों को धोने के लिए मुझमें स्नान करेंगे। जब ये सारे पापकर्मों के फल मुझमें एकत्र हो जायेंगे तो मैं उनसे किस तरह मुक्त हो सकूँगी? तुम इस पर ध्यानपूर्वक विचार करो। ।। ९-९-५ ।।

kiM cAhaM na bhuvaM yAsye narA mayyAmRjantyagham | mRjAmi tadaghaM kutra rAjaMstatra vicintyatAm || 9-9-5 ||
