कोऽपि धारयिता वेगं पतन्त्या मे महीतले । अन्यथा भूतलं भित्त्वा नृप यास्ये रसातलम् ।। ९-९-४ ।।

Mother Ganges replied: When I fall from the sky to the surface of the planet earth, the water will certainly be very forceful. Who will sustain that force? If I am not sustained, I shall pierce the surface of the earth and go down to Rasātala, the Pātāla area of the universe. ।। 9-9-4 ।।

english translation

माता गंगा ने उत्तर दिया: जब मैं आकाश से पृथ्वीलोक के धरातल पर गिरूँगी तो मेरा जल अत्यन्त वेगवान होगा। इस वेग को कौन धारण कर सकेगा? यदि कोई मुझे धारण नहीं कर सकेगा तो मैं पृथ्वी की सतह को भेदकर रसातल में अर्थात् ब्रह्माण्ड के पाताल क्षेत्र में चली जाऊँगी। ।। ९-९-४ ।।
