पितर्युपरतेऽभ्येत्य विकुक्षिः पृथिवीमिमाम् । शासदीजे हरिं यज्ञैः शशाद इति विश्रुतः ॥ ९-६-११ ॥
After his father’s disappearance, Vikukṣi returned to the country and thus became the king, ruling the planet earth and performing various sacrifices to satisfy the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Vikukṣi later became celebrated as Śaśāda. ॥ 9-6-11 ॥

अपने पिता के चले जाने पर विकुक्षि अपने देश लौट आया और पृथ्वीलोक पर शासन करते हुए तथा भगवान् को प्रसन्न करने के लिए विविध यज्ञ करते हुए वह राजा बना। बाद में विकुक्षि शशाद नाम से विख्यात हुआ। ॥ ९-६-११ ॥

पुरञ्जयस्तस्य सुत इन्द्रवाह इतीरितः । ककुत्स्थ इति चाप्युक्तः शृणु नामानि कर्मभिः ॥ ९-६-१२ ॥
The son of Śaśāda was Purañjaya, who is also known as Indravāha and sometimes as Kakutstha. Please hear from me how he received different names for different activities. ॥ 9-6-12 ॥

शशाद का पुत्र पुरञ्जय हुआ जो इन्द्रवाह के रूप में और कभी-कभी ककुत्स्थ के नाम से विख्यात है। अब मुझसे यह सुनो कि उसने विभिन्न कार्यों के लिए भिन्न-भिन्न नाम किस तरह प्राप्त किये। ॥ ९-६-१२ ॥

कृतान्त आसीत्समरो देवानां सह दानवैः । पार्ष्णिग्राहो वृतो वीरो देवैर्दैत्यपराजितैः ॥ ९-६-१३ ॥
Formerly, there was a devastating war between the demigods and the demons. The demigods, having been defeated, accepted Purañjaya as their assistant and then conquered the demons. Therefore this hero is known as Purañjaya, “he who conquered the residence of the demons.” ॥ 9-6-13 ॥

पूर्वकाल में देवताओं तथा असुरों के मध्य एक घमासान युद्ध हुआ। पराजित होकर देवताओं ने पुरञ्जय को अपना सहायक बनाया और तब वे असुरों को पराजित कर सके। अतएव यह वीर पुरञ्जय कहलाता है अर्थात् जिसने असुरों के निवासों को जीत लिया है। ॥ ९-६-१३ ॥

वचनाद्देवदेवस्य विष्णोर्विश्वात्मनः प्रभोः । वाहनत्वे वृतस्तस्य बभूवेन्द्रो महावृषः ॥ ९-६-१४ ॥
Purañjaya agreed to kill all the demons, on the condition that Indra would be his carrier. Because of pride, Indra could not accept this proposal, but later, by the order of the Supreme Lord, Viṣṇu, Indra did accept it and became a great bull carrier for Purañjaya. ॥ 9-6-14 ॥

पुरञ्जय ने सारे असुरों को इस शर्त पर मारना स्वीकार किया कि इन्द्र उसका वाहन बनेगा। किन्तु गर्ववश इन्द्र ने यह प्रस्ताव पहले अस्वीकार कर दिया, किन्तु बाद में भगवान् विष्णु के आदेश से उसने इसे स्वीकार कर लिया और पुरञ्जय की सवारी के लिए वह बड़ा सा बैल बन गया। ॥ ९-६-१४ ॥

स सन्नद्धो धनुर्दिव्यमादाय विशिखाञ्छितान् । स्तूयमानः समारुह्य युयुत्सुः ककुदि स्थितः ॥ ९-६-१५ ॥
Well protected by armor and desiring to fight, Purañjaya took up a transcendental bow and very sharp arrows, and, while being highly praised by the demigods, he got up on the back of the bull [Indra] and sat on its hump. ॥ 9-6-15 ॥

कवच से भलीभाँति सुरक्षित होकर और युद्ध करने की इच्छा से पुरञ्जय ने अपना दिव्य धनुष तथा अत्यन्त तीक्ष्ण बाण धारण किया और देवताओं द्वारा अत्यधिक प्रशंसित होकर वह बैल (इन्द्र) की पीठ पर सवार हुआ तथा उसके डिल्ले पर बैठ गया। ॥ ९-६-१५ ॥
