जित्वा पुरासुरा देवान् ये रसौकांसि भेजिरे । देवस्त्रियो रसां नीताः प्राणिभिः पुनराहरत् ।। ९-२०-३१ ।।

sanskrit

Formerly, after conquering the demigods, all the demons had taken shelter in the lower planetary system known as Rasātala and had brought all the wives and daughters of the demigods there also. Mahārāja Bharata, however, rescued all those women, along with their associates, from the clutches of the demons, and he returned them to the demigods. ।। 9-20-31 ।।

english translation

प्राचीन काल में सारे असुरों ने देवताओं को जीतकर रसातल नामक अधोलोक में शरण ले रखी थी और वे सारे देवताओं की स्त्रियों एवं कन्याओं को भी वहीं ले आये थे। किन्तु भरत महाराज ने इन सभी स्त्रियों को उनके संगियों समेत असुरों के चुंगल से छुड़ाया और उन्हें देवताओं को वापस कर दिया। ।। ९-२०-३१ ।।

सर्वान् कामान् दुदुहतुः प्रजानां तस्य रोदसी । समास्त्रिणवसाहस्रीर्दिक्षु चक्रमवर्तयत् ।। ९-२०-३२ ।।

sanskrit

Mahārāja Bharata provided all necessities for his subjects, both on this earth and in the heavenly planets, for twenty-seven thousand years. He circulated his orders and distributed his soldiers in all directions. ।। 9-20-32 ।।

english translation

महाराज भरत ने २७ हजार वर्षों तक इस पृथ्वी पर तथा स्वर्गलोकों में अपनी प्रजा की सारी आवश्यकताएँ पूरी कीं। उन्होंने सभी दिशाओं में अपने आदेश प्रसारित कर दिए और अपने सैनिक तैनात कर दिए। ।। ९-२०-३२ ।।

स सम्राड् लोकपालाख्यमैश्वर्यमधिराट् श्रियम् । चक्रं चास्खलितं प्राणान् मृषेत्युपरराम ह ।। ९-२०-३३ ।।

sanskrit

As the ruler of the entire universe, Emperor Bharata had the opulences of a great kingdom and unconquerable soldiers. His sons and family had seemed to him to be his entire life. But finally he thought of all this as an impediment to spiritual advancement, and therefore he ceased from enjoying it. ।। 9-20-33 ।।

english translation

समस्त विश्व के शासक के रूप में सम्राट भरत के पास महान् राज्य एवं अजेय सैनिकों का ऐश्वर्य था। उनके पुत्र तथा उनका परिवार उन्हें उनका जीवन प्रतीत होता था। किन्तु अन्तत: उन्होंने इन सबों को आध्यात्मिक प्रगति में बाधक समझा अतएव उन्होंने इनका भोग बन्द कर दिया। ।। ९-२०-३३ ।।

तस्यासन् नृप वैदर्भ्यः पत्न्यस्तिस्रः सुसम्मताः । जघ्नुस्त्यागभयात्पुत्रान् नानुरूपा इतीरिते ।। ९-२०-३४ ।।

O King Parīkṣit, Mahārāja Bharata had three pleasing wives, who were daughters of the King of Vidarbha. When all three of them bore children who did not resemble the King, these wives thought that he would consider them unfaithful queens and reject them, and therefore they killed their own sons. ।। 9-20-34 ।।

english translation

हे राजा परीक्षित, महाराज भरत की तीन मनोहर पत्नियाँ थीं जो विदर्भ के राजा की पुत्रियाँ थीं। जब तीनों के सन्तानें हुईं तो वे राजा के समान नहीं निकलीं, अतएव इन पत्नियों ने यह सोचकर कि राजा उन्हें कृतघ्न रानियाँ समझकर त्याग देंगे, उन्होंने अपने अपने पुत्रों को मार डाला। ।। ९-२०-३४ ।।

तस्यैवं वितथे वंशे तदर्थं यजतः सुतम् । मरुत्स्तोमेन मरुतो भरद्वाजमुपाददुः ।। ९-२०-३५ ।।

sanskrit

The King, his attempt for progeny frustrated in this way, performed a sacrifice named marut-stoma to get a son. The demigods known as the Maruts, being fully satisfied with him, then presented him a son named Bharadvāja. ।। 9-20-35 ।।

english translation

सन्तान के लिए जब राजा का प्रयास इस तरह विफल हो गया तो उसने पुत्रप्राप्ति के लिए मरुत्स्तोम नामक यज्ञ किया। सारे मरुत्गण उससे पूर्णतया सन्तुष्ट हो गये तो उन्होंने उसे भरद्वाज नामक पुत्र उपहार में दिया। ।। ९-२०-३५ ।।
