खड्गमादाय तरसा प्रलीनोडुगणे निशि । अजानन्नहनद्बभ्रोः शिरः शार्दूलशङ्कया ।। ९-२-६ ।।

He took up his sword, but because the stars were covered by clouds, he mistook the cow for the tiger and mistakenly cut off the cows’ head with great force. ।। 9-2-6 ।।

Although Pṛṣadhra had committed the sin unknowingly, his family priest, Vasiṣṭha, cursed him, saying, “In your next life you shall not be able to become a kṣatriya. Instead, you shall take birth as a śūdra because of killing the cow.” ।। 9-2-9 ।।
