श्रीशुक उवाच एवं गतेऽथ सुद्युम्ने मनुर्वैवस्वतः सुते । पुत्रकामस्तपस्तेपे यमुनायां शतं समाः ।। ९-२-१ ।।

sanskrit

Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: Thereafter, when his son Sudyumna had thus gone to the forest to accept the order of vānaprastha, Vaivasvata Manu [Śrāddhadeva], being desirous of getting more sons, performed severe austerities on the bank of the Yamunā for one hundred years. ।। 9-2-1 ।।

english translation

शुकदेव गोस्वामी ने कहा : इसके पश्चात् जब वैवस्वत मनु (श्राद्धदेव) का पुत्र सुद्युम्न वानप्रस्थ आश्रम ग्रहण करने के लिए जंगल में चला गया तो मनु ने और अधिक सन्तान प्राप्त करने की इच्छा से यमुना नदी के तट पर सौ वर्षों तक कठिन तपस्या की। ।। ९-२-१ ।।

ततोऽयजन्मनुर्देवमपत्यार्थं हरिं प्रभुम् । इक्ष्वाकुपूर्वजान् पुत्रान् लेभे स्वसदृशान् दश ।। ९-२-२ ।।

sanskrit

Then, because of this desire for sons, the Manu known as Śrāddhadeva worshiped the Supreme Lord, the Personality of Godhead, the Lord of the demigods. Thus he got ten sons exactly like himself. Among them all, Ikṣvāku was the eldest. ।। 9-2-2 ।।

english translation

तब पुत्र-कामना से श्राद्धदेव ने देवों के देव भगवान् हरि की पूजा की। इस तरह उसे अपने ही सदृश दस पुत्र प्राप्त हुए। इनमें से इक्ष्वाकु सबसे बड़ा था। ।। ९-२-२ ।।

पृषध्रस्तु मनोः पुत्रो गोपालो गुरुणा कृतः । पालयामास गा यत्तो रात्र्यां वीरासनव्रतः ।। ९-२-३ ।।

sanskrit

Among these sons, Pṛṣadhra, following the order of his spiritual master, was engaged as a protector of cows. He would stand all night with a sword to give the cows protection. ।। 9-2-3 ।।

english translation

इन पुत्रों में से पृषध्र अपने गुरु की आज्ञा का पालन करते हुए गायों की रखवाली में लग गया। गायों की रक्षा के लिए वह सारी रात हाथ में तलवार लिए खड़ा रहता। ।। ९-२-३ ।।

एकदा प्राविशद्गोष्ठं शार्दूलो निशि वर्षति । शयाना गाव उत्थाय भीतास्ता बभ्रमुर्व्रजे ।। ९-२-४ ।।

sanskrit

Once at night, while it was raining, a tiger entered the land of the cowshed. Upon seeing the tiger, all the cows, who were lying down, got up in fear and scattered here and there on the land. ।। 9-2-4 ।।

english translation

एक बार रात्रि में, जब वर्षा हो रही थी, एक बाघ गोशाला में घुस आया। उसे देखकर भूमि में लेटी हुई सारी गाएँ डर के मारे खड़ी हो गईं और गोशाला में तितर-बितर हो गईं। ।। ९-२-४ ।।

एकां जग्राह बलवान् सा चुक्रोश भयातुरा । तस्यास्तत्क्रन्दितं श्रुत्वा पृषध्रोऽभिससार ह ।। ९-२-५ ।।

sanskrit

When the very strong tiger seized the cow, the cow screamed in distress and fear, and Pṛṣadhra, hearing the screaming, immediately followed the sound. ।। 9-2-5 ।।

english translation

जब अत्यन्त बलवान बाघ ने एक गाय को पकड़ लिया तो वह भयभीत होकर चिल्लाने लगी। पृषध्र ने यह चीत्कार सुनी और वह तुरन्त इस आवाज का पीछा करने लगा। ।। ९-२-५ ।।
