अहो निरीक्ष्यतामस्या दास्याः कर्म ह्यसाम्प्रतम् । अस्मद्धार्यं धृतवती शुनीव हविरध्वरे ॥ ९-१८-११ ॥
Oh, just see the activities of this servant-maid Śarmiṣṭhā! Disregarding all etiquette, she has put on my dress, just like a dog snatching clarified butter meant for use in a sacrifice. ॥ 9-18-11 ॥

अरे जरा देखो न इस दासी शर्मिष्ठा की करतूतों को, इसने सारे शिष्टाचार को ताक पर रखकर मेरे वस्त्र धारण कर लिये हैं मानो यज्ञ के निमित्त रखे घी को कोई कुत्ता छीन ले। ॥ ९-१८-११ ॥

यैरिदं तपसा सृष्टं मुखं पुंसः परस्य ये । धार्यते यैरिह ज्योतिः शिवः पन्थाश्च दर्शितः ॥ ९-१८-१२ ॥
We are among the qualified brāhmaṇas, who are accepted as the face of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The brāhmaṇas have created the entire universe by their austerity, and they always keep the Absolute Truth within the core of their hearts. They have directed the path of good fortune, ॥ 9-18-12 ॥

हम उन योग्य ब्राह्मणों में से हैं जिन्हें भगवान् का मुख माना गया है। ब्राह्मणों ने अपनी तपस्या से समग्र विश्व को उत्पन्न किया है और वे परम सत्य को अपने अन्त:करण में सदैव धारण करते हैं। उन्होंने सौभाग्य के पथ का निर्देशन किया है ॥ ९-१८-१२ ॥

यान् वन्दन्त्युपतिष्ठन्ते लोकनाथाः सुरेश्वराः । भगवानपि विश्वात्मा पावनः श्रीनिकेतनः ॥ ९-१८-१३ ॥
The path of Vedic civilization, and because they are the only worshipable objects within this world, they are offered prayers and worshiped even by the great demigods, the directors of the various planets, and even by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the Supersoul, the supreme purifier, the husband of the goddess of fortune. ॥ 9-18-13 ॥

जो कि वैदिक सभ्यता का पथ है। वे इस जगत में एकमात्र पूजनीय हैं अतएव उनकी स्तुति की जाती है और विभिन्न लोकों के नायक बड़े से बड़े देवता भी उनकी पूजा करते हैं—यहाँ तक कि सब को पवित्र करने वाले, लक्ष्मी देवी के पति, ॥ ९-१८-१३ ॥

वयं तत्रापि भृगवः शिष्योऽस्या नः पितासुरः । अस्मद्धार्यं धृतवती शूद्रो वेदमिवासती ॥ ९-१८-१४ ॥
And we are even more respectable because we are in the dynasty of Bhṛgu. Yet although this woman’s father, being among the demons, is our disciple, she has put on my dress, exactly like a śūdra taking charge of Vedic knowledge. ॥ 9-18-14 ॥

परमात्मा द्वारा भी वे पूजित हैं और हम तो इसलिए भी अधिक पूज्य हैं क्योंकि हम भृगुवंशी हैं। यद्यपि इस स्त्री का पिता असुर होकर हमारा शिष्य है तो भी इसने मेरे वस्त्र को उसी तरह धारण कर लिया है जिस तरह कोई शूद्र वैदिक ज्ञान का भार सँभाले। ॥ ९-१८-१४ ॥

एवं शपन्तीं शर्मिष्ठा गुरुपुत्रीमभाषत । रुषा श्वसन्त्युरङ्गीव धर्षिता दष्टदच्छदा ॥ ९-१८-१५ ॥
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: When thus rebuked in cruel words, Śarmiṣṭhā was very angry. Breathing heavily like a serpent and biting her lower lip with her teeth, she spoke to the daughter of Śukrācārya as follows. ॥ 9-18-15 ॥
english translation
शुकदेव गोस्वामी ने कहा : शर्मिष्ठा को जब इस तरह कठोर शब्दों से डाँटा गया तो वह अत्यधिक क्रुद्ध हो उठी। सर्पिणी की तरह गहरी साँस छोड़ती और अपने निचले होठ को अपने दाँतों से चबाती वह शुक्राचार्य की पुत्री से इस तरह बोली। ॥ ९-१८-१५ ॥
