यर्ह्यात्मनोऽधिकाराद्याः सर्वाः स्युर्यज्ञसम्पदः । वैतानिकेन विधिना अग्निहोत्रादिना यजेत् ।। ७-१४-१६ ।।

sanskrit

When one is enriched with wealth and knowledge which are under his full control and by means of which he can perform yajña or please the Supreme Personality of Godhead, one must perform sacrifices, offering oblations to the fire according to the directions of the śāstras. In this way one should worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead. ।। 7-14-16 ।।

english translation

जब कोई व्यक्ति सम्पत्ति तथा ज्ञान से समृद्ध हो, जो उसके पूर्ण नियंत्रण में हों और जिनसे वह यज्ञ सम्पन्न कर सके या भगवान् को प्रसन्न कर सके तो उसे शास्त्रों के निर्देशानुसार अग्नि में आहुतियाँ डालकर यज्ञ करना चाहिए। इस तरह उसे भगवान् की पूजा करनी चाहिए। ।। ७-१४-१६ ।।

न ह्यग्निमुखतोयं वै भगवान् सर्वयज्ञभुक् । इज्येत हविषा राजन् यथा विप्रमुखे हुतैः ।। ७-१४-१७ ।।

sanskrit

The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, is the enjoyer of sacrificial offerings. Yet although His Lordship eats the oblations offered in the fire, my dear King, He is still more satisfied when nice food made of grains and ghee is offered to Him through the mouths of qualified brāhmaṇas. ।। 7-14-17 ।।

english translation

भगवान् श्री कृष्ण सारी यज्ञ-आहुतियों के भोक्ता हैं। यद्यपि वे अग्नि में डाली गई आहुतियाँ खाते हैं फिर भी हे राजा, जब उन्हें अन्न तथा घी से बना व्यंजन योग्य ब्राह्मणों के मुख से होकर अर्पित किया जाता है, तो वे और भी प्रसन्न होते हैं। ।। ७-१४-१७ ।।

तस्माद्ब्राह्मणदेवेषु मर्त्यादिषु यथार्हतः । तैस्तैः कामैर्यजस्वैनं क्षेत्रज्ञं ब्राह्मणाननु ।। ७-१४-१८ ।।

sanskrit

Therefore, my dear King, first offer prasāda unto the brāhmaṇas and the demigods, and after sumptuously feeding them you may distribute prasāda to other living entities according to your ability. In this way you will be able to worship all living entities — or, in other words, the supreme living entity within every living entity. ।। 7-14-18 ।।

english translation

अतएव हे राजा, सर्वप्रथम ब्राह्मणों तथा देवताओं को प्रसाद प्रदान करो और जब वे भलीभाँति खा चुकें तो तुम अपनी सामर्थ्य के अनुसार अन्य जीवों को प्रसाद बाँटो। इस प्रकार तुम सारे जीवों की अर्थात् प्रत्येक जीव के भीतर के परम पुरुष की पूजा कर सकोगे। ।। ७-१४-१८ ।।

कुर्यादापरपक्षीयं मासि प्रौष्ठपदे द्विजः । श्राद्धं पित्रोर्यथावित्तं तद्बन्धूनां च वित्तवान् ।। ७-१४-१९ ।।

sanskrit

A brāhmaṇa who is sufficiently rich must offer oblations to the forefathers during the dark-moon fortnight in the latter part of the month of Bhādra. Similarly, he should offer oblations to the relatives of the forefathers during the mahālayā ceremonies in the month of Āśvina. ।। 7-14-19 ।।

english translation

काफी धनवान ब्राह्मण को भाद्र मास के कृष्ण पक्ष में पितरों को आहुति देनी चाहिए। इसी प्रकार पूर्वजों के सम्बन्धियों को आश्विन मास में महालया पर्व* के अवसर पर आहुति देनी चाहिए। ।। ७-१४-१९ ।।

अयने विषुवे कुर्याद्व्यतीपाते दिनक्षये । चन्द्रादित्योपरागे च द्वादशीश्रवणेषु च ।। ७-१४-२० ।।

sanskrit

One should perform the śrāddha ceremony on the Makara-saṅkrānti [the day when the sun begins to move north] or on the Karkaṭa-saṅkrānti [the day when the sun begins to move south]. One should also perform this ceremony on the Meṣa-saṅkrānti day and the Tulā-saṅkrānti day, in the yoga named Vyatīpāta, on that day in which three lunar tithis are conjoined, during an eclipse of either the moon or the sun, on the twelfth lunar day, and in the Śravaṇa-nakṣatra. ।। 7-14-20 ।।

english translation

मनुष्य को चाहिए कि मकर संक्रान्ति (जब सूर्य उत्तरायण की ओर जाने लगता है) के दिन या कर्कट संक्रान्ति (जब सूर्य दक्षिणायन की ओर जाने लगता है) के दिन श्राद्धकर्म करे; वह इस श्राद्धकर्म को मेष संक्रान्ति के दिन तथा तुला संक्रान्ति के दिन, जब तीनों चन्द्र तिथियाँ एकसाथ मिलती हैं, व्यतीपात नामक योग में, चन्द्र या सूर्यग्रहण के समय द्वादशी के दिन तथा श्रवण नक्षत्र में करे ।। ७-१४-२० ।।
