दरीगम्भीरवक्त्रेण पिबता च नभस्तलम् । लिहता जिह्वयर्क्षाणि ग्रसता भुवनत्रयम् ।। ६-९-१६ ।।

sanskrit

As he yawned again and again, he seemed to be trying to swallow the whole sky with his mouth, which was as deep as a cave. ।। 6-9-16 ।।

english translation

वह पुन: पुन: जम्हाई ले रहा था, मानो कन्दरा के समान अपने विशाल मुख में वह सारे आकाश को निगल जाना चाहत हो। ।। ६-९-१६ ।।

darIgambhIravaktreNa pibatA ca nabhastalam | lihatA jihvayarkSANi grasatA bhuvanatrayam || 6-9-16 ||

महता रौद्रदंष्ट्रेण जृम्भमाणं मुहुर्मुहुः । वित्रस्ता दुद्रुवुर्लोका वीक्ष्य सर्वे दिशो दश ।। ६-९-१७ ।।

sanskrit

He seemed to be licking up all the stars in the sky with his tongue and eating the entire universe with his long, sharp teeth. Seeing this gigantic demon, everyone, in great fear, ran here and there in all directions. ।। 6-9-17 ।।

english translation

ऐसा प्रतीत हो रहा था मानो वह आकाश के सभी तारों को अपनी जीभ से चाट रहा हो और अपने लम्बे पैने दाँतों से सम्पूर्ण ब्रह्माण्ड को खाने जा रहा हो। उस विराट असुर को देखकर सभी व्यक्ति डर के मारे इधर-उधर चारों दिशाओं में भागने लगे। ।। ६-९-१७ ।।

येनावृता इमे लोकास्तमसा त्वाष्ट्रमूर्तिना । स वै वृत्र इति प्रोक्तः पापः परमदारुणः ।। ६-९-१८ ।।

sanskrit

That very fearful demon, who was actually the son of Tvaṣṭā, covered all the planetary systems by dint of austerity. Therefore he was named Vṛtra, or one who covers everything. ।। 6-9-18 ।।

english translation

उस अत्यन्त भयानक असुर ने, जो वास्तव में त्वष्टा का ही पुत्र था, अपने तप बल से सभी लोकों को आच्छादित कर लिया था। इसलिए वह वृत्र अर्थात् प्रत्येक वस्तु को आच्छादित करने वाला कहलाया। ।। ६-९-१८ ।।

तं निजघ्नुरभिद्रुत्य सगणा विबुधर्षभाः । स्वैः स्वैर्दिव्यास्त्रशस्त्रौघैः सोऽग्रसत्तानि कृत्स्नशः ।। ६-९-१९ ।।

sanskrit

The demigods, headed by Indra, charged the demon with their soldiers, striking him with their own transcendental bows and arrows and other weapons but Vṛtrāsura swallowed all their weapons. ।। 6-9-19 ।।

english translation

इन्द्र इत्यादि सभी देवता अपने सैनिकों सहित उस असुर पर टूट पड़े। वे अपने दिव्य धनुष-बाणों तथा अन्य हथियारों से उसे मारने लगे, किन्तु वृत्रासुर उनके सभी हथियार निगलता गया। ।। ६-९-१९ ।।

taM nijaghnurabhidrutya sagaNA vibudharSabhAH | svaiH svairdivyAstrazastraughaiH so'grasattAni kRtsnazaH || 6-9-19 ||

ततस्ते विस्मिताः सर्वे विषण्णा ग्रस्ततेजसः । प्रत्यञ्चमादिपुरुषमुपतस्थुः समाहिताः ।। ६-९-२० ।।

sanskrit

Struck with wonder and disappointment upon seeing the strength of the demon, the demigods lost their own strength. Therefore they all met together to try to please the Supersoul, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Nārāyaṇa, by worshiping Him. ।। 6-9-20 ।।

english translation

उस असुर की शक्ति देखकर सभी देवता अत्यन्त आश्चर्यचकित तथा निराश हो गये और उनकी सारी शक्ति जाती रही। अत: वे सभी परमात्मा अर्थात् पूर्ण पुरुषोत्तम भगवान् नारायण की पूजा करके उन्हें प्रसन्न करने के निमित्त एकत्र हुए। ।। ६-९-२० ।।
