न तथा ह्यघवान् राजन् पूयेत तप आदिभिः । यथा कृष्णार्पितप्राणस्तत्पूरुषनिषेवया ॥ ६-१-१६ ॥
My dear King, if a sinful person engages in the service of a bona fide devotee of the Lord and thus learns how to dedicate his life unto the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa, he can be completely purified. One cannot be purified merely by undergoing austerity, penance, brahmacarya and the other methods of atonement I have previously described. ॥ 6-1-16 ॥

हे राजन्! यदि पापी व्यक्ति भगवान् के प्रामाणिक भक्त की सेवा में लग जाता है और इस तरह यह सीख लेता है कि अपना जीवन किस तरह कृष्ण के चरणकमलों में समर्पित करना चाहिए तो वह पूर्णतया शुद्ध हो सकता है। तपस्या, ब्रह्मचर्य तथा मेरे द्वारा पहले वर्णित प्रायश्चित्त के अन्य साधनों को सम्पन्न करने मात्र से वह पापी शुद्ध नहीं बन सकता। ॥ ६-१-१६ ॥

सध्रीचीनो ह्ययं लोके पन्थाः क्षेमोऽकुतोभयः । सुशीलाः साधवो यत्र नारायणपरायणाः ॥ ६-१-१७ ॥
The path followed by pure devotees, who are well-behaved and fully endowed with the best qualifications, is certainly the most auspicious path in this material world. It is free from fear, and it is authorized by the śāstras. ॥ 6-1-17 ॥

सुशील तथा सर्वोत्तम गुणों से युक्त शुद्ध भक्तों के द्वारा पालन किया जाने वाला मार्ग निश्चय ही इस भौतिक जगत का सबसे मंगलमय मार्ग है। यह भय से रहित है और शास्त्रों द्वारा प्रमाणित है। ॥ ६-१-१७ ॥

प्रायश्चित्तानि चीर्णानि नारायणपराङ्मुखम् । न निष्पुनन्ति राजेन्द्र सुराकुम्भमिवापगाः ॥ ६-१-१८ ॥
My dear King, as a pot containing liquor cannot be purified even if washed in the waters of many rivers, nondevotees cannot be purified by processes of atonement even if they perform them very well. ॥ 6-1-18 ॥

हे राजन्! जिस तरह सुरा से सने हुए पात्र को अनेक नदियों के जल से धोने पर भी शुद्ध नहीं किया जा सकता, उसी तरह अभक्तों को प्रायश्चित्त की विधियों से शुद्ध नहीं बनाया जा सकता, भले ही वे उन्हें बहुत अच्छी तरह से सम्पन्न क्यों न करें। ॥ ६-१-१८ ॥

सकृन्मनः कृष्णपदारविन्दयोर्निवेशितं तद्गुणरागि यैरिह । न ते यमं पाशभृतश्च तद्भटान् स्वप्नेऽपि पश्यन्ति हि चीर्णनिष्कृताः ॥ ६-१-१९ ॥
Although not having fully realized Kṛṣṇa, persons who have even once surrendered completely unto His lotus feet and who have become attracted to His name, form, qualities and pastimes are completely freed of all sinful reactions, for they have thus accepted the true method of atonement. Even in dreams, such surrendered souls do not see Yamarāja or his order carriers, who are equipped with ropes to bind the sinful. ॥ 6-1-19 ॥

यद्यपि जिन पुरुषों ने कृष्ण का पूर्ण साक्षात्कार नहीं किया है, तो भी यदि एक बार भी उनके चरणकमलों की पूर्णरूपेण शरण ग्रहण कर ली है और जो उनके नाम, रूप, गुणों तथा लीलाओं से आकृष्ट हो चुके हैं, वे सारे पापकर्मों से पूर्णतया मुक्त हो जाते हैं, क्योंकि इस तरह उन्होंने प्रायश्चित्त की सही विधि को स्वीकार किया है। ऐसे शरणागत व्यक्तियों को यमराज या उनके दूत, जो कि पापी को बाँधने के लिए रस्सियाँ लिए रहते हैं, स्वप्न में भी दिखाई नहीं पड़ते। ॥ ६-१-१९ ॥

अत्र चोदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् । दूतानां विष्णुयमयोः संवादस्तं निबोध मे ॥ ६-१-२० ॥
In this regard, learned scholars and saintly persons describe a very old historical incident involving a discussion between the order carriers of Lord Viṣṇu and those of Yamarāja. Please hear of this from me. ॥ 6-1-20 ॥

इस सम्बन्ध में विद्वान जन तथा सन्त पुरुष एक अत्यन्त प्राचीन ऐतिहासिक घटना का वर्णन करते हैं जिसमें भगवान् विष्णु तथा यमराज के दूतों के बीच संवाद हआ था। कृपा करके इसे मुझसे सुनिये। ॥ ६-१-२० ॥
