अपि बत स वै कृपण एणबालको मृतहरिणीसुतोऽहो ममानार्यस्य शठकिरातमतेरकृतसुकृतस्य कृतविस्रम्भ आत्मप्रत्ययेन तदविगणयन् सुजन इवागमिष्यति ॥ ५-८-१६ ॥
Bharata Mahārāja would think: Alas, the deer is now helpless. I am now very unfortunate, and my mind is like a cunning hunter, for it is always filled with cheating propensities and cruelty. The deer has put its faith in me, just as a good man who has a natural interest in good behavior forgets the misbehavior of a cunning friend and puts his faith in him. Although I have proved faithless, will this deer return and place its faith in me? ॥ 5-8-16 ॥

भरत महाराज सोचते—ओह! यह मृग अब असहाय है। मैं अत्यन्त अभागा हूँ और मेरा मन चतुर शिकारी की भाँति है क्योंकि यह सदैव छल तथा निष्ठुरता से पूर्ण रहता है। इस मृग ने मुझ पर उसी प्रकार विश्वास किया है, जिस प्रकार एक भद्र पुरुष धूर्त मित्र के दुराचार को भूलकर उस पर विश्वास प्रकट करता है। यद्यपि मैं अविश्वासी सिद्ध हो चुका हूँ, किन्तु क्या यह मृग मुझ पर विश्वास करके पुन: लौट आएगा? ॥ ५-८-१६ ॥

अपि क्षेमेणास्मिन्नाश्रमोपवने शष्पाणि चरन्तं देवगुप्तं द्रक्ष्यामि ॥ ५-८-१७ ॥
Alas, is it possible that I shall again see this animal protected by the Lord and fearless of tigers and other animals? Shall I again see him wandering in the garden eating soft grass? ॥ 5-8-17 ॥
english translation
ओह! क्या ऐसा हो सकता है कि मैं इस पशु को देवताओं से रक्षित तथा हिंस्र पशुओं से निर्भय रूप में फिर देखूँ? क्या मैं उसे पुन: उद्यान में मुलायम घास चरते हुए देख सकूँगा? ॥ ५-८-१७ ॥

अपि च न वृकः सालावृकोऽन्यतमो वा नैकचर एकचरो वा भक्षयति ॥ ५-८-१८ ॥
I do not know, but the deer might have been eaten by a wolf or a dog or by the boars that flock together or the tiger who travels alone. ॥ 5-8-18 ॥
english translation
मुझे पता नहीं, किन्तु हो सकता है कि भेडिय़े या कुत्ते अथवा झुंडों में रहने वाले सुअर या फिर अकेले घूमने वाले बाघ ने उस मृग को खा लिया हो। ॥ ५-८-१८ ॥

निम्लोचति ह भगवान् सकलजगत्क्षेमोदयस्त्रय्यात्माद्यापि मम न मृगवधून्यास आगच्छति ॥ ५-८-१९ ॥
Alas, when the sun rises, all auspicious things begin. Unfortunately, they have not begun for me. The sun-god is the Vedas personified, but I am bereft of all Vedic principles. That sun-god is now setting, yet the poor animal who trusted in me since its mother died has not returned. ॥ 5-8-19 ॥

ओह! सूर्य के उदय होते ही सभी शुभ कार्य होने लगते हैं। दुर्भाग्यवश, मेरे लिए ऐसा नहीं हो रहा है। सूर्यदेव साक्षात् वेद हैं, किन्तु मैं समस्त वैदिक नियमों से शून्य हूँ। वे सूर्यदेव अब अस्त हो रहे हैं, तो भी वह बेचारा पशु, जिसने अपनी माता की मृत्यु होने पर मुझपर विश्वास किया था, अभी तक नहीं लौटा है। ॥ ५-८-१९ ॥

अपि स्विदकृतसुकृतमागत्य मां सुखयिष्यति हरिणराजकुमारो विविधरुचिरदर्शनीयनिजमृगदारकविनोदैरसन्तोषं स्वानामपनुदन् ॥ ५-८-२० ॥
That deer is exactly like a prince. When will it return? When will it again display its personal activities, which are so pleasing? When will it again pacify a wounded heart like mine? I certainly must have no pious assets, otherwise the deer would have returned by now. ॥ 5-8-20 ॥
english translation
वह मृग राजकुमार के तुल्य है। वह कब लौटेगा? वह कब फिर अपनी मनोहर क्रीड़ाएँ दिखायेगा? वह कब मेरे आहत-हृदय को पुन: शान्त करेगा? अवश्य ही मेरे पुण्य शेष नहीं हैं, अन्यथा अब तक वह मृग अवश्य लौट आया होता। ॥ ५-८-२० ॥
