इति कृतानुषङ्ग आसनशयनाटनस्नानाशनादिषु सह मृगजहुना स्नेहानुबद्धहृदय आसीत् ।। ५-८-११ ।।

Due to attachment for the deer, Mahārāja Bharata lay down with it, walked about with it, bathed with it and even ate with it. Thus his heart became bound to the deer in affection. ।। 5-8-11 ।।

english translation

मृग के प्रति आसक्ति बढ़ जाने से महाराज भरत उसी मृग के साथ लेटते, टहलते, स्नान करते, यहाँ तक कि उसी के साथ खाना भी खाते। इस प्रकार उनका हृदय मृग के स्नेह में बँध गया। ।। ५-८-११ ।।

कुशकुसुमसमित्पलाशफलमूलोदकान्याहरिष्यमाणो वृकसालावृकादिभ्यो भयमाशंसमानो यदा सह हरिणकुणकेन वनं समाविशति ।। ५-८-१२ ।।

When Mahārāja Bharata wanted to enter the forest to collect kuśa grass, flowers, wood, leaves, fruits, roots and water, he would fear that dogs, jackals, tigers and other ferocious animals might kill the deer. He would therefore always take the deer with him when entering the forest. ।। 5-8-12 ।।

english translation

जब महाराज भरत को कुश, फूल, लकड़ी, पत्ते, फल, कन्द तथा जल लाने के लिए जंगल में जाना होता तो उन्हें भय बना रहता कि कुत्ते, सियार, बाघ तथा अन्य हिंस्र पशु आकर मृग को मार न डालें। अत: वे जंगल में जाते समय उसे अपने साथ-ले जाते। ।। ५-८-१२ ।।

पथिषु च मुग्धभावेन तत्र तत्र विषक्तमतिप्रणयभरहृदयः कार्पण्यात्स्कन्धेनोद्वहति एवमुत्सङ्ग उरसि चाधायोपलालयन् मुदं परमामवाप ।। ५-८-१३ ।।

When entering the forest, the animal would appear very attractive to Mahārāja Bharata due to its childish behavior. Mahārāja Bharata would even take the deer on his shoulders and carry it due to affection. His heart was so filled with great love for the deer that he would sometimes keep it on his lap or, when sleeping, on his chest. In this way he felt great pleasure in fondling the animal. ।। 5-8-13 ।।

जंगल के मार्ग में वह मृग अपने चपल स्वभाव के कारण महाराज भरत को अत्यन्त आकर्षक लगता। महाराज भरत उसे अपने कंधों में भी चढ़ा कर स्नेहवश दूर तक ले जाते। उनका हृदय मृग-प्रेम से इतना पूरित था कि वे कभी उसे अपनी गोद में ले लेते, तो कभी सोते समय उसे अपनी छाती पर चढ़ाए रखते। इस प्रकार उस पशु को दुलारते हुए उन्हें अत्यधिक सुख का अनुभव होता था। ।। ५-८-१३ ।।

क्रियायां निर्वर्त्यमानायामन्तरालेऽप्युत्थायोत्थाय यदैनमभिचक्षीत तर्हि वाव स वर्षपतिः प्रकृतिस्थेन मनसा तस्मा आशिष आशास्ते स्वस्ति स्ताद्वत्स ते सर्वत इति ।। ५-८-१४ ।।

When Mahārāja Bharata was actually worshiping the Lord or was engaged in some ritualistic ceremony, although his activities were unfinished, he would still, at intervals, get up and see where the deer was. In this way he would look for it, and when he could see that the deer was comfortably situated, his mind and heart would be very satisfied, and he would bestow his blessings upon the deer, saying, “My dear calf, may you be happy in all respects.” ।। 5-8-14 ।।

english translation

जब महाराज भरत ईश्वर की आराधना में या अन्य अनुष्ठान में व्यस्त रहते तो अनुष्ठानों को समाप्त किए बिना बीच-बीच में ही वे उठ उठ जाते और देखने लगते कि मृग कहाँ है। इस प्रकार जब वे यह देख लेते कि वह मृग सुखपूर्वक है, तब कहीं उनके मन तथा हृदय को सन्तोष होता और तब वे उस मृग को यह कह कर आशीष देते, “हे वत्स, तुम सभी प्रकार से सुखी रहो।” ।। ५-८-१४ ।।

अन्यदा भृशमुद्विग्नमना नष्टद्रविण इव कृपणः सकरुणमतितर्षेण हरिणकुणकविरहविह्वलहृदयसन्तापस्तमेवानुशोचन् किल कश्मलं महदभिरम्भित इति होवाच ।। ५-८-१५ ।।

If Bharata Mahārāja sometimes could not see the deer, his mind would be very agitated. He would become like a miser, who, having obtained some riches, had lost them and had then become very unhappy. When the deer was gone, he would be filled with anxiety and would lament due to separation. Thus he would become illusioned and speak as follows. ।। 5-8-15 ।।

कभी कभी भरत महाराज यदि उस मृग को न देखते तो उनका मन अत्यन्त व्याकुल हो उठता। उनकी स्थिति उस कंजूस व्यक्ति के समान हो जाती जिसे कुछ धन प्राप्त हुआ हो, किन्तु उसके खो जाने से वह अत्यन्त दुखी हो गया हो। जब मृग चला जाता, तो उन्हें चिन्ता हो जाती और वियोग के कारण वे विलाप करने लगते। इस प्रकार मोहग्रस्त होने पर वे निम्नलिखित प्रकार से कहते। ।। ५-८-१५ ।।
