सामुद्रीं देवदेवोक्तामुपयेमे शतद्रुतिम् । यां वीक्ष्य चारुसर्वाङ्गीं किशोरीं सुष्ठ्वलङ्कृताम् । परिक्रमन्तीमुद्वाहे चकमेऽग्निः शुकीमिव ।। ४-२४-११ ।।

sanskrit

Mahārāja Barhiṣat — henceforward known as Prācīnabarhi — was ordered by the supreme demigod Brahmā to marry the daughter of the ocean named Śatadruti. Her bodily features were completely beautiful, and she was very young. She was decorated with the proper garments, and when she came into the marriage arena and began circumambulating it, the fire-god Agni became so attracted to her that he desired her company, exactly as he had formerly desired to enjoy Śukī. ।। 4-24-11 ।।

english translation

महाराज बर्हिषत् (आगे प्राचीनबर्हि नाम से विख्यात) को परम देवता ब्रह्माजी ने समुद्र की कन्या शतद्रुति के साथ विवाह करने का आदेश दिया था। उसके शरीर के अंग-प्रत्यंग अत्यन्त सुन्दर थे और वह अत्यन्त युवा थी। वह समुचित परिधानों से अलंकृत थी। जब वह विवाह- मण्डप में आकर प्रदक्षिणा करने लगी तो अग्निदेव उस पर इतने मोहित हो गये कि उन्होंने उसे संगी बना कर उसके साथ भोग करना चाहा जिस तरह पहले भी उन्होंने शुकी के साथ करना चाहा था। ।। ४-२४-११ ।।

विबुधासुरगन्धर्वमुनिसिद्धनरोरगाः । विजिताः सूर्यया दिक्षु क्वणयन्त्यैव नूपुरैः ।। ४-२४-१२ ।।

sanskrit

While Śatadruti was thus being married, the demons, the denizens of Gandharvaloka, the great sages, and the denizens of Siddhaloka, the earthly planets and Nāgaloka, although highly exalted, were all captivated by the tinkling of her ankle bells. ।। 4-24-12 ।।

english translation

जब शतद्रुति का इस तरह विवाह हो रहा था, तो असुर, गन्धर्वलोक के वासी, बड़े-बड़े साधु एवं सिद्धलोक, पृथ्वीलोक तथा नागलोक के वासी, सभी परम विद्वान् होते हुए भी उसके नुपूरों की झनकार से मोहित हो रहे थे। ।। ४-२४-१२ ।।

प्राचीनबर्हिषः पुत्राः शतद्रुत्यां दशाभवन् । तुल्यनामव्रताः सर्वे धर्मस्नाताः प्रचेतसः ।। ४-२४-१३ ।।

sanskrit

King Prācīnabarhi begot ten children in the womb of Śatadruti. All of them were equally endowed with religiosity, and all of them were known as the Pracetās. ।। 4-24-13 ।।

english translation

राजा प्राचीनबर्हि ने शतद्रुति के गर्भ से दस पुत्र उत्पन्न किये। वे सभी समान रूप से धर्मात्मा थे और प्रचेता नाम से विख्यात हुए। ।। ४-२४-१३ ।।

पित्राऽऽदिष्टाः प्रजासर्गे तपसेऽर्णवमाविशन् । दशवर्षसहस्राणि तपसार्चंस्तपस्पतिम् ।। ४-२४-१४ ।।

sanskrit

When all these Pracetās were ordered by their father to marry and beget children, they all entered the ocean and practiced austerities and penances for ten thousand years. Thus they worshiped the master of all austerity, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. ।। 4-24-14 ।।

english translation

जब इन सभी प्रचेताओं को उनके पिता ने विवाह करके सन्तान उत्पन्न करने का आदेश दिया तो सबों ने समुद्र में प्रवेश किया और दस हजार वर्षों तक तपस्या की। इस प्रकार उन्होंने समस्त तपस्या के स्वामी पूर्ण पुरुषोत्तम भगवान् की उपासना की। ।। ४-२४-१४ ।।

यदुक्तं पथि दृष्टेन गिरिशेन प्रसीदता । तद्ध्यायन्तो जपन्तश्च पूजयन्तश्च संयताः ।। ४-२४-१५ ।।

sanskrit

When all the sons of Prācīnabarhi left home to execute austerities, they met Lord Śiva, who, out of great mercy, instructed them about the Absolute Truth. All the sons of Prācīnabarhi meditated upon the instructions, chanting and worshiping them with great care and attention. ।। 4-24-15 ।।

english translation

जब प्राचीनबर्हि के सभी पुत्रों ने तपस्या करने के उद्देश्य से घर छोड़ दिया तो उन्हें शिवजी मिले, जिन्होंने अत्यन्त कृपा करके उन्हें परम सत्य के विषय में उपदेश दिया। प्राचीनबर्हि के सभी पुत्रों ने उनके उपदेशों को अत्यन्त सावधानी तथा मनोयोग से जपते तथा पूजा करते हुए उनके विषय में ध्यान किया। ।। ४-२४-१५ ।।
