तमूचुर्विस्मितास्तत्र यजमानमथर्त्विजः । हवींषि हूयमानानि न ते गृह्णन्ति देवताः ।। ४-१३-२६ ।।

sanskrit

The priests engaged in the sacrifice then informed King Aṅga: O King, we are properly offering the clarified butter in the sacrifice, but despite all our efforts the demigods do not accept it. ।। 4-13-26 ।।

english translation

तब यज्ञ में लगे पुरोहितों ने राजा अंग को सूचित किया : हे राजन्, हम यज्ञ में विधिपूर्वक शुद्ध घी की आहुति दे रहे हैं, किन्तु हमारे सारे यत्नों के बावजूद देवतागण उसे स्वीकार नहीं कर रहे हैं। ।। ४-१३-२६ ।।

राजन् हवींष्यदुष्टानि श्रद्धयासादितानि ते । छन्दांस्ययातयामानि योजितानि धृतव्रतैः ।। ४-१३-२७ ।।

sanskrit

O King, we know that the paraphernalia to perform the sacrifice is well collected by you with great faith and care and is not polluted. Our chanting of the Vedic hymns is also not deficient in any way, for all the brāhmaṇas and priests present here are expert and are executing the performances properly. ।। 4-13-27 ।।

english translation

हे राजन्, हमें ज्ञात है कि आपने अत्यन्त श्रद्धा तथा सावधानी से यज्ञ की सारी सामग्री एकत्रित की है और वह दूषित नहीं है। हमारे द्वारा उच्चरित वैदिक मंत्रों में भी किसी प्रकार की कमी नहीं है क्योंकि यहां उपस्थित सभी ब्राह्मण तथा पुरोहित योग्य है और समस्त कृत्यों को ठीक से कर भी रहे हैं। ।। ४-१३-२७ ।।

rAjan havIMSyaduSTAni zraddhayAsAditAni te | chandAMsyayAtayAmAni yojitAni dhRtavrataiH || 4-13-27 ||

न विदामेह देवानां हेलनं वयमण्वपि । यन्न गृह्णन्ति भागान् स्वान् ये देवाः कर्मसाक्षिणः ।। ४-१३-२८ ।।

sanskrit

Dear King, we do not find any reason that the demigods should feel insulted or neglected in any way, but still the demigods who are witnesses for the sacrifice do not accept their shares. We do not know why this is so. ।। 4-13-28 ।।

english translation

हे राजन्, हमें ऐसा कोई कारण नहीं दिखता जिससे देवतागण अपने को किसी प्रकार से अपमानित या उपेक्षित समझ सकें, तो भी यज्ञ के साक्षी देवता अपना भाग ग्रहण नहीं कर रहे हैं। हमारी समझ में नहीं आता कि ऐसा क्यों है? ।। ४-१३-२८ ।।

na vidAmeha devAnAM helanaM vayamaNvapi | yanna gRhNanti bhAgAn svAn ye devAH karmasAkSiNaH || 4-13-28 ||

मैत्रेय उवाच अङ्गो द्विजवचः श्रुत्वा यजमानः सुदुर्मनाः । तत्प्रष्टुं व्यसृजद्वाचं सदस्यांस्तदनुज्ञया ।। ४-१३-२९ ।।

sanskrit

Maitreya explained that King Aṅga, after hearing the statements of the priests, was greatly aggrieved. At that time he took permission from the priests to break his silence and inquired from all the priests who were present in the sacrificial arena. ।। 4-13-29 ।।

english translation

मैत्रेय ने बतलाया कि पुरोहितों के इस कथन को सुनकर राजा अंग अत्यधिक खिन्न हो उठा। तब उसने पुरोहितों से कुछ कहने की अनुमति माँगी और यज्ञस्थल में उपस्थित समस्त पुरोहितों से उसने पूछा। ।। ४-१३-२९ ।।

नागच्छन्त्याहुता देवा न गृह्णन्ति ग्रहानिह । सदसस्पतयो ब्रूत किमवद्यं मया कृतम् ।। ४-१३-३० ।।

sanskrit

King Aṅga addressed the priestly order: My dear priests, kindly tell me what offense I have committed. Although invited, the demigods are neither taking part in the sacrifice nor accepting their shares. ।। 4-13-30 ।।

english translation

राजा अंग ने पुरोहित वर्ग को सम्बोधित करते हुए पूछा : हे पुरोहितो, आप कृपा करके बताएँ कि मुझसे कौन सा अपराध हुआ है। आमंत्रित होने पर भी देवता न तो यज्ञ में सम्मिलित हो रहे हैं और न अपना भाग ग्रहण कर रहे हैं। ।। ४-१३-३० ।।
