सूत उवाच प्रश्नस्त्वया महर्षेऽयं कृतो लोकभ्रमापहः । नारायणकथा यत्र गीता कलिमलापहा ॥ १२-८-६ ॥
Sūta Gosvāmī said: O great sage Śaunaka, your very question will help remove everyone’s illusion, for it leads to the topics of Lord Nārāyaṇa, which cleanse away the contamination of this Kali age. ॥ 12-8-6 ॥

सूत गोस्वामी ने कहा: हे महान ऋषि शौनक, आपका प्रश्न ही हर किसी के भ्रम को दूर करने में मदद करेगा, क्योंकि यह भगवान नारायण के विषयों की ओर ले जाता है, जो इस कलियुग के प्रदूषण को दूर करता है। ॥ १२-८-६ ॥

प्राप्तद्विजातिसंस्कारो मार्कण्डेयः पितुः क्रमात् । छन्दांस्यधीत्य धर्मेण तपःस्वाध्यायसंयुतः ॥ १२-८-७ ॥
After being purified by his father’s performance of the prescribed rituals leading to Mārkaṇḍeya’s brahminical initiation, Mārkaṇḍeya studied the Vedic hymns and strictly observed the regulative principles. He became advanced in austerity and Vedic knowledge and remained a lifelong celibate. ॥ 12-8-7 ॥

मार्कण्डेय की ब्राह्मण दीक्षा के लिए उनके पिता द्वारा निर्धारित अनुष्ठानों के प्रदर्शन से शुद्ध होने के बाद, मार्कण्डेय ने वैदिक भजनों का अध्ययन किया और नियामक सिद्धांतों का सख्ती से पालन किया। वह तपस्या और वैदिक ज्ञान में उन्नत हो गये और आजीवन ब्रह्मचारी रहे। ॥ १२-८-७ ॥

बृहद्व्रतधरः शान्तो जटिलो वल्कलाम्बरः । बिभ्रत्कमण्डलुं दण्डमुपवीतं समेखलम् ॥ १२-८-८ ॥
Appearing most peaceful with his matted hair and his clothing made of bark, he furthered his spiritual progress by carrying the mendicant’s waterpot, staff, sacred thread, brahmacārī belt, black deerskin, lotus-seed prayer beads and bundles of kuśa grass. ॥ 12-8-8 ॥

अपने उलझे हुए बालों और छाल से बने कपड़ों के साथ सबसे शांतिपूर्ण दिखाई देते हुए, उन्होंने भिक्षुक के जलपात्र, कर्मचारी, पवित्र धागा, ब्रह्मचारी बेल्ट, काले हिरण की खाल, कमल-बीज प्रार्थना माला और कुश घास के बंडलों को लेकर अपनी आध्यात्मिक प्रगति को आगे बढ़ाया। ॥ १२-८-८ ॥

कृष्णाजिनं साक्षसूत्रं कुशांश्च नियमर्द्धये । अग्न्यर्कगुरुविप्रात्मस्वर्चयन् सन्ध्ययोर्हरिम् ॥ १२-८-९ ॥
At the sacred junctures of the day he regularly worshiped the Supreme Personality of Godhead in five forms — the sacrificial fire, the sun, his spiritual master, the brāhmaṇas and the Supersoul within his heart. ॥ 12-8-9 ॥

दिन के पवित्र समय में वह नियमित रूप से पाँच रूपों में भगवान के परम व्यक्तित्व की पूजा करते थे - यज्ञ अग्नि, सूर्य, अपने आध्यात्मिक गुरु, ब्राह्मण और अपने हृदय के भीतर परमात्मा। ॥ १२-८-९ ॥

सायं प्रातः स गुरवे भैक्ष्यमाहृत्य वाग्यतः । बुभुजे गुर्वनुज्ञातः सकृन्नो चेदुपोषितः ॥ १२-८-१० ॥
Morning and evening he would go out begging, and upon returning he would present all the food he had collected to his spiritual master. Only when his spiritual master invited him would he silently take his one meal of the day; otherwise he would fast. ॥ 12-8-10 ॥

सुबह-शाम वह भिक्षा माँगने निकलता और वापस आकर अपने द्वारा एकत्र किया हुआ सारा भोजन अपने आध्यात्मिक गुरु को भेंट कर देता। केवल जब उनके आध्यात्मिक गुरु ने उन्हें आमंत्रित किया तो वे चुपचाप दिन का एक समय का भोजन करते थे; अन्यथा वह उपवास करेगा। ॥ १२-८-१० ॥
