कथा इमास्ते कथिता महीयसां विताय लोकेषु यशः परेयुषाम् । विज्ञानवैराग्यविवक्षया विभो वचो विभूतीर्न तु पारमार्थ्यम् ॥ १२-३-१४ ॥
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: O mighty Parīkṣit, I have related to you the narrations of all these great kings, who spread their fame throughout the world and then departed. My real purpose was to teach transcendental knowledge and renunciation. Stories of kings lend power and opulence to these narrations but do not in themselves constitute the ultimate aspect of knowledge. ॥ 12-3-14 ॥

शुकदेव गोस्वामी ने कहा: हे पराक्रमी परीक्षित, मैंने तुम्हें उन सभी महान राजाओं के आख्यान सुनाए हैं, जिन्होंने अपनी प्रसिद्धि पूरी दुनिया में फैलाई और फिर चले गए। मेरा वास्तविक उद्देश्य पारलौकिक ज्ञान और वैराग्य की शिक्षा देना था। राजाओं की कहानियाँ इन आख्यानों को शक्ति और समृद्धि प्रदान करती हैं लेकिन अपने आप में ज्ञान का अंतिम पहलू नहीं हैं। ॥ १२-३-१४ ॥
