स्त्रीशूद्रद्विजबन्धूनां त्रयी न श्रुतिगोचरा । कर्मश्रेयसि मूढानां श्रेय एवं भवेदिह । इति भारतमाख्यानं कृपया मुनिना कृतम् ।। १-४-२५ ।।

Out of compassion, the great sage thought it wise that this would enable men to achieve the ultimate goal of life. Thus he compiled the great historical narration called the Mahābhārata for women, laborers and friends of the twice-born. ।। 1-4-25 ।।

english translation

महर्षि ने अनुकम्पावश हितकर समझा कि यह मनुष्यों को जीवन का चरम लक्ष्य प्राप्त करने में यह सहायक होगा। इस प्रकार उन्होंने स्त्रियों, शूद्रों तथा द्विज-बन्धुओं के लिए महाभारत नामक महान ऐतिहासिक कथा का संकलन किया। ।। १-४-२५ ।।
