सूत उवाच यदा परीक्षित्कुरुजाङ्गलेऽशृणोत् कलिं प्रविष्टं निजचक्रवर्तिते । निशम्य वार्तामनतिप्रियां ततः शरासनं संयुगशौण्डिराददे ॥ १-१६-१० ॥
Sūta Gosvāmī said: While Mahārāja Parīkṣit was residing in the capital of the Kuru empire, the symptoms of the Age of Kali began to infiltrate within the jurisdiction of his state. When he learned about this, he did not think the matter very palatable. This did, however, give him a chance to fight. He took up his bow and arrows and prepared himself for military activities. ॥ 1-16-10 ॥

सूत गोस्वामी ने कहा : जब महाराज परीक्षित कुरु-साम्राज्य की राजधानी में रह रहे थे, तो अपने राज्य की सीमा के भीतर कलियुग के लक्षणों को प्रवेश होते देखा। जब उन्हें इसका पता चला, तो उन्हें यह रुचिकर प्रतीत नहीं हुआ। लेकिन इससे उन्हें उसके विरुद्ध लडऩे का अवसर अवश्य प्राप्त हो सका। अतएव उन्होंने अपना धनुष-बाण उठाया और सैनिक कार्यवाही के लिए सन्नद्ध हो गये। ॥ १-१६-१० ॥
