चीरवासा निराहारो बद्धवाङ्मुक्तमूर्धजः । दर्शयन्नात्मनो रूपं जडोन्मत्तपिशाचवत् ॥ १-१५-४३ ॥
After that, Mahārāja Yudhiṣṭhira dressed himself in torn clothing, gave up eating all solid foods, voluntarily became dumb and let his hair hang loose. All this combined to make him look like an urchin or madman with no occupation. ॥ 1-15-43 ॥

तत्पश्चात् महाराज युधिष्ठिर ने फटे हुए वस्त्र पहन लिये, ठोस आहार लेना बन्द कर दिया, वे जान कर गूँगे बन गये और बालों को खोल दिया। इन सबके मिल-जुले रुप में, वे एक उजड्ड या वृत्तिविहीन पागल की तरह दिखने लगे। ॥ १-१५-४३ ॥
