II ऋषयऊचुः II त्वयाखलुपुराणानि सेतिहासानिचानघ । आख्यातान्यप्यधीतानि धर्मशास्त्राणियान्युत ॥ १-१-६ ॥
The sages said: Respected Sūta Gosvāmī, you are completely free from all vice. You are well versed in all the scriptures famous for religious life, and in the Purāṇas and the histories as well, for you have gone through them under proper guidance and have also explained them. ॥ 1-1-6 ॥

मुनियों ने कहा : हे पूज्य सूत गोस्वामी, आप समस्त प्रकार के पापों से पूर्ण रूप से मुक्त हैं। आप धार्मिक जीवन के लिए विख्यात समस्त शास्त्रों एवं पुराणों के साथ-साथ इतिहासों में निपुण हैं, क्योंकि आपने समुचित निर्देशन में उन्हें पढ़ा है और उनकी व्याख्या भी की है। ॥ १-१-६ ॥

यानि वेदविदां श्रेष्ठो भगवान् बादरायणः । अन्ये च मुनयः सूत परावरविदो विदुः ॥ १-१-७ ॥
As the eldest of the scholars of the Vedas you know Vyâsadeva, the Lord among them - and Sûta, you know also the other ones well versed in physical and metaphysical knowledge. ॥ 1-1-7 ॥
english translation
हे सूत गोस्वामी, आप ज्येष्ठतम विद्वान एवं वेदान्ती होने के कारण ईश्वर के अवतार व्यासदेव के ज्ञान से अवगत हैं और आप उन अन्य मुनियों को भी जानते हैं जो सभी प्रकार के भौतिक तथा आध्यात्मिक ज्ञान में निष्णात हैं। ॥ १-१-७ ॥

वेत्थ त्वं सौम्य तत्सर्वं तत्त्वतस्तदनुग्रहात् । ब्रूयुः स्निग्धस्य शिष्यस्य गुरवो गुह्यमप्युत ॥ १-१-८ ॥
Pure and simple natured, you because of their grace are well-informed concerning all the matters in question; spiritual masters [after all] will confide to a submissive disciple all the secrets they know. ॥ 1-1-8 ॥
english translation
इससे भी अधिक, चूँकि आप विनीत हैं, आपके गुरुओं ने एक सौम्य शिष्य जानकर आप पर सभी तरह से अनुग्रह किया है अत: आप हमें वह सब बतायें जिसे आपने उनसे वैज्ञानिक ढंग से सीखा है। ॥ १-१-८ ॥

तत्र तत्राञ्जसाऽऽयुष्मन् भवता यद्विनिश्चितम् । पुंसामेकान्ततः श्रेयस्तन्नः शंसितुमर्हसि ॥ १-१-९ ॥
Please, therefore, being blessed with many years, explain to us, in an easily understandable way, what you have ascertained to be the absolute and ultimate good for the people in general. ॥ 1-1-9 ॥

हे आयुष्मन् ! सम्पूर्ण ग्रन्थों में सरलरीतिसे जो तुमने निश्चय किया वही सच पुरुषों के हितकारक उपदेश को हमसे कहो I ॥ १-१-९ ॥

प्रायेणाल्पायुषः सभ्य कलावस्मिन् युगे जनाः । मन्दाः सुमन्दमतयो मन्दभाग्या ह्युपद्रुताः ॥ १-१-१० ॥
O learned one, in this iron Age of Kali men almost always have but short lives. They are quarrelsome, lazy, misguided, unlucky and, above all, always disturbed. ॥ 1-1-10 ॥

हे विद्वान, कलि के इस लौह-युग में लोगों की आयु न्यून है। वे झगड़ालू, आलसी, पथभ्रष्ट, अभागे होते हैं तथा साथ ही साथ सदैव विचलित रहते हैं। ॥ १-१-१० ॥
