देव्युवाच ॥ कलौ कलुषिते काले दुर्जये दुरतिक्रमे ॥ अपुण्यतमसाच्छन्ने लोके धर्मपराङ्मुखे ॥ १ ॥
The goddess said:— In Kali-yuga, this corrupt time is invincible and difficult to overcome. In a world covered with impure darkness and turned away from righteousness.
english translation
devyuvAca ॥ kalau kaluSite kAle durjaye duratikrame ॥ apuNyatamasAcchanne loke dharmaparAGmukhe ॥ 1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptक्षीणे वर्णाश्रमाचारे संकटे समुपस्थिते ॥ सर्वाधिकारे संदिग्धे निश्चिते वापि पर्यये ॥ २ ॥
When the system of varṇa and āśrama was exhausted, a crisis arose. In all rights, in doubt or in certain alternative.
english translation
kSINe varNAzramAcAre saMkaTe samupasthite ॥ sarvAdhikAre saMdigdhe nizcite vApi paryaye ॥ 2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतदोपदेशे विहते गुरुशिष्यक्रमे गते ॥ केनोपायेन मुच्यंते भक्तास्तव महेश्वर ॥ ३ ॥
When the instructions of the spiritual master were violated, the order of discipleship was abandoned. By what means are Your devotees liberated, O Lord?

tadopadeze vihate guruziSyakrame gate ॥ kenopAyena mucyaMte bhaktAstava mahezvara ॥ 3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptईश्वर उवाच ॥ आश्रित्य परमां विद्यां हृद्यां पञ्चाक्षरीं मम ॥ भक्त्या च भावितात्मानो मुच्यंते कलिजा नराः ॥ ४ ॥
Lord Śiva said:— Men of the Kali age are liberated when their souls are purified by devotion after resorting to my pleasing Mantra of five syllables.
english translation
Izvara uvAca ॥ Azritya paramAM vidyAM hRdyAM paJcAkSarIM mama ॥ bhaktyA ca bhAvitAtmAno mucyaMte kalijA narAH ॥ 4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptमनोवाक्कायजैर्दोषैर्वक्तुं स्मर्तुमगोचरैः ॥ दूषितानां कृतघ्नानां निंदकानां छलात्मनाम् ॥ ५ ॥
It is impossible to speak or remember because of the faults of the mind, speech and body. They are corrupt ungrateful blasphemers and deceitful.

manovAkkAyajairdoSairvaktuM smartumagocaraiH ॥ dUSitAnAM kRtaghnAnAM niMdakAnAM chalAtmanAm ॥ 5 ॥
