ऋषय ऊचुः ॥ किं तत्पाशुपतं ज्ञानं कथं पशुपतिश्शिवः ॥ कथं धौम्याग्रजः पृष्टः कृष्णेनाक्लिष्टकर्मणा ॥ १ ॥
The sages said:— What is the Pāśupata knowledge? How is Śiva the lord of Paśus? Why was Dhaumya’s elder brother asked by Kṛṣṇa of unstrained activities.
english translation
एतत्सर्वं समाचक्ष्व वायो शंकरविग्रह ॥ तत्समो न हि वक्तास्ति त्रैलोक्येष्वपरः प्रभुः ॥ २ ॥
O lord Vayu, of the form of Śiva, please explain all these things. In the whole of the three worlds there is no other person competent to explain it like you.
english translation
सूत उवाच ॥ इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तेषां महर्षीणां प्रभंजनः ॥ संस्मृत्य शिवमीशानं प्रवक्तुमुपचक्रमे ॥ ३ ॥
Sūta said:— On hearing the words of the sages, Vāyu thought upon Śiva, and began to explain.
english translation
वायुरुवाच ॥ पुरा साक्षान्महेशेन श्रीकंठाख्येन मन्दरे ॥ देव्यै देवेन कथितं ज्ञानं पाशुपतं परम् ॥ ४ ॥
Vāyu said:— This excellent and exalted Pāśupata knowledge was mentioned to the goddess by lord Śiva on the mountain Mandara.
english translation
तदेव पृष्टं कृष्णेन विष्णुना विश्वयोनिना ॥ पशुत्वं च सुरादीनां पतित्वं च शिवस्य च ॥ ५ ॥
The same question was asked by Kṛṣṇa, the cause of the universe about the animal nature of the gods and others and the overlordship of Śiva.
