भर्तारं परिपूर्णं च सर्वलोकमहेश्वरम् ॥ चामरासक्तहस्ताश्च देवीं देवं सिषेविरे ॥ ११ ॥

He is the perfect husband and the great lord of all the worlds They worshiped the goddess Durgā with their hands attached to the cāmaras.

ततः प्रियाः कथा वृत्ता विनोदाय महेशयोः ॥ त्राणाय च नृणां लोके ये शिवं शरणं गताः ॥ १२ ॥

Then pleasing discourses ensued for the diversion of the lord and the goddess and for the succour of the devotees who sought refuge in him.

tataH priyAH kathA vRttA vinodAya mahezayoH ॥ trANAya ca nRNAM loke ye zivaM zaraNaM gatAH ॥ 12 ॥

तदावसरमालोक्य सर्वलोकमहेश्वरी ॥ भर्तारं परिपप्रच्छ सर्वलोकमहेश्वरम् ॥ १३ ॥

Then seeing an opportune moment the goddess asked Śiva, the lord of the worlds.

देव्युवाच ॥ केन वश्यो महादेवो मर्त्यानां मंदचेतसाम् ॥ आत्मतत्त्वाद्यशक्तानामात्मनामकृतात्मनाम् ॥ १४ ॥

The goddess said:— How can the lord be brought under control by slow-witted men who are not interested in spiritual principles and who do not have self-control?

devyuvAca ॥ kena vazyo mahAdevo martyAnAM maMdacetasAm ॥ AtmatattvAdyazaktAnAmAtmanAmakRtAtmanAm ॥ 14 ॥

ईश्वर उवाच ॥ न कर्मणा न तपसा न जपैर्नासनादिभिः ॥ न ज्ञानेन न चान्येन वश्यो ऽहं श्रद्धया विना ॥ १५ ॥

Lord Śiva said:— I cannot be enticed either by holy rites or penance or Japas or postures or knowledge or by any other means except faith.
