पुरा मरीचिना शप्ताः केचिन्मुनिपिशाचकाः ॥ संपीड्य राक्षसैर्भावैस्तपसोविघ्नमाचरन् ॥ ५६ ॥
In the past some sages and devils were cursed by Marīci They were oppressed by the demons and were obstructing their austerities.
english translation
purA marIcinA zaptAH kecinmunipizAcakAH ॥ saMpIDya rAkSasairbhAvaistapasovighnamAcaran ॥ 56 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptस च तैः पीड्यमानो ऽपि तपः कुर्वन्कथञ्चन ॥ सदा नमः शिवायेति क्रोशति स्मार्तनादवत् ॥ ५७ ॥
Though harassed by them he somehow maintained his penance. He uttered “Namaḥ Śivāya” like one in great distress.

sa ca taiH pIDyamAno 'pi tapaH kurvankathaJcana ॥ sadA namaH zivAyeti krozati smArtanAdavat ॥ 57 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतन्नादश्रवणादेव तपसो विघ्नकारिणः ॥ ते तं बालं समुत्सृज्य मुनयस्समुपाचरन् ॥ ५८ ॥
At the very hearing of that sound the sages who hindered the penance left off that boy and began to serve him.
english translation
tannAdazravaNAdeva tapaso vighnakAriNaH ॥ te taM bAlaM samutsRjya munayassamupAcaran ॥ 58 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतपसा तस्य विप्रस्य चोपमन्योर्महात्मनः ॥ चराचरं च मुनयः प्रदीपितमभूज्जगत् ॥ ५९ ॥
O sages, the whole universe including the mobile and immobile beings became ignited due to the penance of that brahmin, the noble Upamanyu.
english translation
tapasA tasya viprasya copamanyormahAtmanaH ॥ carAcaraM ca munayaH pradIpitamabhUjjagat ॥ 59 ॥
