विहारोप्यावयोरस्य जगतस्त्राणकारणात् ॥ ततस्तदर्थं त्वय्यद्य क्रीडोक्तिं कृतवाहनम् ॥ ४६ ॥
Even our sport and pastime is meant for the universe. For that very purpose I have made this jocular remark.
english translation
स चायमचिरादर्थस्तवैवाविष्करिष्यते ॥ क्रोधस्य जनकं वाक्यं हृदि कृत्वेदमब्रवीत् ॥ ४७ ॥
That purpose ere long will be revealed to you.” On hearing this the goddess, remembered the remark that caused her annoyance and said.
english translation
देव्युवाच ॥ श्रुतपूर्वं हि भगवंस्तव चाटु वचो मया ॥ येनैवमतिधीराहमपि प्रागभिवंचिता ॥ ४८ ॥
The goddess said:— O lord, your jocular remarks I have heard before whereby I have been deceived though I am very bold.
english translation
प्राणानप्यप्रिया भर्तुर्नारी या न परित्यजेत् ॥ कुलांगना शुभा सद्भिः कुत्सितैव हि गम्यते ॥ ४९ ॥
Even an auspicious lady of a noble family who does not abandon her life incurs the displeasure of her husband and is held despicable by good men.
english translation
भूयसी च तवाप्रीतिरगौरमिति मे वपुः ॥ क्रीडोक्तिरपि कालीति घटते कथमन्यथा ॥ ५० ॥
Your displeasure is very great because I am not fair. How is the remark “Kālī” relevant otherwise though it be a jocular remark?
