वायुरुवाच ॥ यदा पुनः प्रजाः सृष्टा न व्यवर्धन्त वेधसः ॥ तदा मैथुनजां सृष्टिं ब्रह्मा कर्तुममन्यत ॥ १ ॥

Vāyu said:— When the creation of Brahmā did not multiply Brahmā thought of creation by the process of sexual intercourse.

english translation

vAyuruvAca ॥ yadA punaH prajAH sRSTA na vyavardhanta vedhasaH ॥ tadA maithunajAM sRSTiM brahmA kartumamanyata ॥ 1 ॥

न निर्गतं पुरा यस्मान्नारीणां कुलमीश्वरात् ॥ तेन मैथुनजां सृष्टिं न शशाक पितामहः ॥ २ ॥

Since the race of women had not emanated from the lord formerly, Brahmā could not produce creation through sexual intercourse.

english translation

na nirgataM purA yasmAnnArINAM kulamIzvarAt ॥ tena maithunajAM sRSTiM na zazAka pitAmahaH ॥ 2 ॥

ततस्स विदधे बुद्धिमर्थनिश्चयगामिनीम् ॥ प्रजानमेव वृद्ध्यर्थं प्रष्टव्यः परमेश्वर ॥ ३ ॥

Then he finally resolved that the lord should be asked in respect of multiplying the subjects.

tatassa vidadhe buddhimarthanizcayagAminIm ॥ prajAnameva vRddhyarthaM praSTavyaH paramezvara ॥ 3 ॥

प्रसादेन विना तस्य न वर्धेरन्निमाः प्रजाः ॥ एवं संचिन्त्य विश्वात्मा तपः कर्तुं प्रचक्रमे ॥ ४ ॥

Thinking that without his grace the subjects will not increase, Brahmā began to perform penance.

prasAdena vinA tasya na vardherannimAH prajAH ॥ evaM saMcintya vizvAtmA tapaH kartuM pracakrame ॥ 4 ॥

तदाद्या परमा शक्तिरनंता लोकभाविनी ॥ आद्या सूक्ष्मतरा शुद्धा भावगम्या मनोहरा ॥ ५ ॥

That is the original supreme energy, which is infinite and sustains the entire universe. The first is the subtlest, the purest, the most beautiful, the most accessible to the senses.

tadAdyA paramA zaktiranaMtA lokabhAvinI ॥ AdyA sUkSmatarA zuddhA bhAvagamyA manoharA ॥ 5 ॥
