।। सनत्कुमार उवाच ।। तपस्तपति योऽरण्ये वन्यमूलफलाशनः ।। योऽधीते ऋचमेकां हि फलं स्यात्तत्समं मुने ।। १ ।।

sanskrit

Sanatkumāra said:— O sage, the fruit is the same whether one performs penance in a forest restricting his diet to roots and fruits there or studies a single Vedic verse.

english translation

|| sanatkumAra uvAca || tapastapati yo'raNye vanyamUlaphalAzanaH || yo'dhIte RcamekAM hi phalaM syAttatsamaM mune || 1 ||

श्रुतेरध्ययनात्पुण्यं यदाप्नोति द्विजोत्तमः ।। तदध्यापनतश्चापि द्विगुणं फलमश्नुते ।। २ ।।

sanskrit

By teaching the Veda, an excellent brahmin attains twice the merit that he attains by studying it.

english translation

zruteradhyayanAtpuNyaM yadApnoti dvijottamaH || tadadhyApanatazcApi dviguNaM phalamaznute || 2 ||

जगद्यथा निरालोकं जायतेऽशशिभास्करम् ।। विना तथा पुराणं ह्यध्येयमस्मान्मुने सदा ।। ३।।

sanskrit

The universe will go without light if the moon and the sun were not present. The same will happen if the Purāṇas too, O sage, were not.

english translation

jagadyathA nirAlokaM jAyate'zazibhAskaram || vinA tathA purANaM hyadhyeyamasmAnmune sadA || 3||

तप्यमानं सदाज्ञानान्निरये योऽपि शास्त्रतः ।। सम्बोधयति लोकं तं तस्मात्पूज्यः पुराणगः ।। ४ ।।

sanskrit

A Purāṇist enlightens the people through Śāstras, the people who are in distress in the hell due to ignorance. Hence he shall be worshipped.

english translation

tapyamAnaM sadAjJAnAnniraye yo'pi zAstrataH || sambodhayati lokaM taM tasmAtpUjyaH purANagaH || 4 ||

सर्वेषां चैव पात्राणां मध्ये श्रेष्ठः पुराणवित् ।। पतनात्त्रायते यस्मात्तस्मात्पात्रमुदाहृतम् ।। ५ ।।

sanskrit

Among all the deserving men the knower of Purāṇa is the most excellent. He is considered worthy because he saves people from fall.

english translation

sarveSAM caiva pAtrANAM madhye zreSThaH purANavit || patanAttrAyate yasmAttasmAtpAtramudAhRtam || 5 ||
