ज्ञानं विज्ञानमारोग्यं रूपवत्त्वं तथैव च ॥ सौभाग्यं चैव तपसा प्राप्यते सर्वदा सुखम् ॥ ५१ ॥
Knowledge, perfect wisdom, health, beauty, good fortune and perpetual happiness are the offshoots of penance.
english translation
jJAnaM vijJAnamArogyaM rUpavattvaM tathaiva ca ॥ saubhAgyaM caiva tapasA prApyate sarvadA sukham ॥ 51 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतपसा सृज्यते विश्वं ब्रह्मा विश्वं विनाश्रमम् ॥ पाति विष्णुर्हरोऽप्यत्ति धत्ते शेषोऽखिलां महीम् ॥ ५२ ॥
It is by penance that Brahmā creates the universe; Viṣṇu protects it without any strain; Śiva annihilates and Śeṣa upholds the entire earth.
english translation
tapasA sRjyate vizvaM brahmA vizvaM vinAzramam ॥ pAti viSNurharo'pyatti dhatte zeSo'khilAM mahIm ॥ 52 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptविश्वामित्रो गाधिसुतस्तपसैव महामुने ॥ क्षत्रियोऽथाभवद्विप्रः प्रसिद्धं त्रिभवेत्विदम् ॥ ५३ ॥
O great sage, the Kṣatriya king Viśvāmitra, the son of Gādhi, became a brahmin through penance. This is well known in the three worlds.
english translation
vizvAmitro gAdhisutastapasaiva mahAmune ॥ kSatriyo'thAbhavadvipraH prasiddhaM tribhavetvidam ॥ 53 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptइत्युक्तं ते महाप्राज्ञ तपोमाहात्म्यमुत्तमम् ॥ शृण्वध्ययनमाहात्म्यं तपसोऽधिकमुत्तमम् ॥ ५४ ॥
O intelligent one, thus the excellent glory of penance (tapas) has been mentioned to you. Now listen to the glory of the study of the Vedas which is far more excellent than penance itself.
english translation
ityuktaM te mahAprAjJa tapomAhAtmyamuttamam ॥ zRNvadhyayanamAhAtmyaM tapaso'dhikamuttamam ॥ 54 ॥
