रुरोद स शिशुस्तस्य पुरो हि परमेशितुः ।। प्राकृतात्मजवत्तत्र भवाचाररतस्य हि ।। १६ ।।

Like a common child he cried in front of the Great lord who was engaged in worldly activities.

Afraid of Śiva, the Earth pondered deeply over it and appeared before him in the guise of a good lady.

तम्बालं द्रुतमुत्थाय क्रोडयां निदधे वरम् ।। स्तन्यं सापाययत्प्रीत्या दुग्धं स्वोपरिसम्भवम् ।।१८।।

She lifted up the child immediately and held him to her chest. Lovingly she suckled the child with her excellent breast milk that flowed over her body.

english translation

tambAlaM drutamutthAya kroDayAM nidadhe varam || stanyaM sApAyayatprItyA dugdhaM svoparisambhavam ||18||

चुचुम्ब तन्मुखं स्नेहात्स्मित्वा क्रीडयदात्मजम् ।। सत्यभावात्स्वयं माता परमेशहितावहा ।।१९।।

She kissed the child’s face lovingly and petted him smilingly. In the absence of Satī she herself acted as his mother in the interest of lord Śiva.

Śiva knew that she was the Earth. Śiva, the cause of protection and enjoyment, the immanent soul, on seeing her activities became contented and eagerly said to her laughingly.
